ASSISTANT DEAN FOR SCHOLARLY COMMUNICATIONS
(AND CO-DIRECTOR, OFFICE OF DIGITAL SCHOLARLY PUBLISHING)

Penn State University Libraries seeks applications and nominations for 
a dynamic academic administrator to provide creative leadership in 
expanding the University Libraries' innovative programs in scholarly 
communications, a growing partnership between the Libraries, the Penn 
State Press, Penn State University faculty, and colleagues in other 
research universities.  The Assistant Dean reports to the Dean of 
University Libraries and is a key member of the Dean's administrative 
team.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:   The Assistant Dean for Scholarly Communications (and

Co-Director of the Office of Digital Scholarly Publishing) is 
responsible for the planning, organization, policy development, and 
implementation of the Libraries' scholarly communications program.  This

administrator provides collaborative leadership with computing units,
the 
Penn State Press, and the Libraries' departments and collection 
development groups to coordinate and develop digital publications, 
collections, electronic repositories and appropriate software and 
hardware platforms. Project coordination may include participation in 
digital initiatives within the Committee for Institutional Cooperation 
(the Big Ten institutions), the Research Library Group, OCLC, the
Digital 
Library Federation, and with other units of the University.  Additional 
responsibilities include fostering grant initiatives, coordinating and 
providing oversight of all grant activities for the University
Libraries, 
and providing administrative oversight for the Department of
Preservation, 
which includes the digitization production unit. 
 
The Assistant Dean also holds the position of Co-Director, Office of 
Digital Scholarly Publishing (ODSP) that was established in partnership 
with the Penn State Press in March, 2005; the other co-director is the 
associate director of the Penn State Press.  In this role, the Assistant

Dean works closely with the Penn State Press and University faculty in 
developing new opportunities for digital scholarly publications,
including 
monographs, serials, proceedings, and databases, and in exploring 
appropriate business models including rights management.  Effective 
December 1, 2005, the Penn State Press reports to the Dean of University

Libraries.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:  Required: Masters in Library Science from an ALA-
accredited program (or equivalent academic degree), significant
experience 
in a major research university with at least five years experience in 
library collection development, scholarly publishing or communications, 
and/or digital library programs.  Knowledge of trends in scholarly 
communications.  Library or publishing experience in increasingly 
responsible positions, including supervisory and budgetary experience.  
Management style that is collaborative and empowers others to excel.   
Demonstrated leadership and ability to effect change in a challenging
and 
complex information environment.  Excellent writing and communications 
skills.  Desired: Ability to qualify for immediate tenure upon
appointment 
at the rank of Associate Librarian or Librarian. Experience with writing

and/or managing grants.
