SOUTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY CARBONDALE
LIBRARY AFFAIRS

Title of Position: Collection Development Librarian

Appointment: Assistant or Associate Professor, full-time, 12 month, 
continuing

Available: July 1, 2006, or later

Environment:  The library services of Southern Illinois University 
Carbondale (SIUC) are centralized in Morris Library. The Library holds 
more than 2.4 million volumes, 3.1 million microform units, over 12,500 
current periodicals and serials, and a wide-range of electronic 
resources and databases. As the campus center for access to academic 
information and collaborative academic technology projects, the Library 
provides assistive services including reference, instructional and 
technical support, distance learning, geographic information systems 
(GIS), and multimedia courseware development. Morris Library is a member

of the Association of Research Libraries and the Greater Western Library

Alliance.  Librarians at SIUC are faculty and are covered by collective 
bargaining.  In January 2006, the Library will begin an extensive and 
complete renovation and expansion of Morris Library which represents the

largest capital construction project in the history of the University.

Responsibilities:  Responsible for the selection of materials for the 
Library's general materials accounts. Recommend allocation of 
acquisition budget for library materials, including consideration of 
factors such as inflation rates, foreign exchange rates, and level of 
research/teaching in various subject areas. Work with Acquisitions 
Librarian and Electronic Resources Librarian to ensure efficient and 
effective expenditure of library materials budget.  Develop and maintain

collection development policy. Maintain and enhance approval plans for 
purchase of monographic materials. Work with Library faculty to 
facilitate selection of appropriate materials for the collection. Serve 
as liaison to academic departments as needed.  Oversee the selection of 
gift materials to be added to the Library's collections. Represent the 
Library on appropriate state and regional committees that promote 
collaboration among libraries in purchasing and sharing library 
materials and other resources.

Required Qualifications:
* ALA accredited Master's of Library Science. 
* For appointment at the Assistant Professor rank: minimum 3 years 
professional experience in collection development in an academic 
library.  For appointment at the Associate Professor rank: minimum 5 
years professional experience in collection development in an academic 
library with a clear record of innovation and improvement in collection 
development program and services. 
* Strong leadership skills and the ability to work both independently
and 
collegially in a demanding and rapidly changing environment using well-
developed analytical, organizational, management, and communication 
skills (oral and written).
* For appointment at the Assistant Professor rank: interest and
potential 
to meet established Library Affairs criteria for promotion and tenure, 
including professional service and published research.  For appointment 
at the Associate Professor rank: a sustained record of peer-reviewed 
research and publications including a record of professional service at 
state, regional, or national levels.

Preferred Qualifications: 
* Additional Masters in Humanities field.
* Supervisory experience.
* Experience working with other libraries in shared collection 
development.
* Record of successful achievements in grant applications and awards. 

Salary:   Competitive   (Assistant Professor $50,000 minimum)
                (Associate Professor $55,000 minimum)
