Subject: Story Research -- Looking for Acquisition Librarians to
Interview
I'm a freelance writer on assignment for the monthly newsletter of the
Publishers Marketing Association (PMA). The PMA is a trade association
for independent publishers. The PMA's web site is
http://www.pma-online.org
I am researching a story on the Library of Congress' CIP program. CIP
stands for Cataloguing in Publication. A CIP record is a bibliographic
record prepared by the Library of Congress that facilitates book
processing for libraries and book distributors.
Currently self-published works are not part of the CIP program. This
has independent publishers upset since they feel that many self-
published titles would be of interest to library patrons. The author
John Grisham has self published books. Steve Covey (as in Seven
Habits...) has also self published.
Rather than "guess" at how acquisition librarians feel about this I
would like to get comment to the following questions:
1) Do you use CIP bibliographic information to help purchase titles?
2) Does a book not having CIP data inhibit its being purchased by a
library? Why or why not?
3) If you do not use CIP data in selecting books for purchase, what
information do you use (i.e. reviews, catalogues, etc.)
4) As an acquisition librarian how do you feel about self-published
books as a category?
Thank you, Jenny McCune, phone: 406-586-7044.
