NOTICE OF PROFESSIONAL POSITION VACANCY

*_ELECTRONIC ACQUISITIONS LIBRARIAN_*

 The University of Pennsylvania Library has an excellent opportunity for 
a librarian with an interest in electronic resources and is seeking a 
qualified candidate for this position. Under the general supervision of 
the Head, Electronic Acquisitions Department, this position is involved 
in purchasing and maintaining accessibility to an ever increasing set of 
electronic resources available to the University of Pennsylvania 
community. We are looking for someone who works well with ambiguity, 
flourishes in a very demanding environment, is flexible and has a good 
sense of humor. The library is especially seeking applicants that 
reflect the diversity of the Penn student population.  The Electronic 
Acquisitions Department maintains licenses and subscriptions to 
thousands of electronic journals, hundreds of databases and other 
information resources, and is rapidly expanding. The Electronic 
Acquisitions Librarian reports to Head, Electronic Acquisitions Department.

 *Broad Responsibilities: *

Under the general supervision of the department head, leads and manages 
the acquisitions work of the Electronic Acquisitions Department. Working 
collaboratively with other members of the Information Processing Center 
(IPC), particularly the Head of Monographic Acquisitions and the Head of 
Serials, along with staff of the Collection Development Council (CDC) 
and Information Technology and Digital Development (ITaDD), is 
responsible for providing support services for the acquisitions and 
management of digital resources in a variety of formats.  With the 
department head, helps to shape the development of overall policies and 
procedures in keeping with national standards, manages workflow within 
the unit and coordinates the work of the department with the other 
information processing units through-out the library system.

*Duties*:

Acquire and ensure availability of a large collection of electronic 
resources.  Maintain a central repository of information on licenses and 
other metadata regarding the acquisition of digital information. 
 Negotiate purchases and renewals with bibliographers and outside 
vendors, may act as a liaison between the vendors and library to ensure 
consistent approaches to licensing.  Collaborate with cataloging units 
to ensure public access and record maintenance.  Work in consort with 
colleagues in acquisitions, public services, ITaDD, collection 
development and cataloguing. Function as the primary contact for the 
Library with vendors of electronic resources, including acting as the 
technical contact.  May act as a liaison between the library and 
consortia to ensure best purchasing and licensing practices.  Generally 
support the electronic acquisitions department, serve as back-up to the 
department head when necessary and may supervise non-professional staff. 
Analyze and coordinate the development of projects and resources. Keep 
current with developments and emerging trends in the acquisitions of 
electronic resources and works closely with library staff on related 
issues.

*Qualifications*:

 Required: 

 MLS degree from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent in skills and 
experience.

*Highly desirable*:

Experience maintaining and troubleshooting electronic resource 
management systems, openURL software management systems, proxy servers 
and federated search tools.  Experience negotiating and keeping track of 
complex licensing agreements.  Flexibility in prioritizing multiple 
projects; Ability to problem-solve; Propensity for detail.

*Preferred:* 

Excellent communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills; Knowledge of 
metadata developments and applications; Knowledge of local and regional 
consortia and familiarity with current consortia agreements.

Knowledge of trends in electronic resources and issues related to 
providing access to electronic resources Knowledge of integrated library 
systems.  Ability to work in a collaborative and supportive manner with 
staff from various constituencies within the Penn Libraries.
