Leader, Technical Services Division
General Libraries
Emory University's General Libraries invites nominations and
applications for the position of Leader, Technical Services Division.
Reporting to the Vice-Provost and Director of Libraries, the position
provides strategic leadership for technical services in a research
library. The division staff of approximately 40 fte is organized into
six teams, including Acquisitions, Database Quality Management,
Monographic Cataloging, Serials Control, and Technical Services for
Government Documents, plus a newly formed Electronic Resources Team and
an at-large divisional position of Technology and Metadata librarian.
Within a team-based and user-centered organization, the position
collaborates with other division and office leaders on the library's
senior management team on library-wide policy issues, program
development
and budget allocation.
Key Responsibilities: The Division Leader will articulate a vision and
lead innovation for 21st century technical services in a research
library.
He/she will be responsible for planning, developing, implementing and
assessing technical services and operations within a complex and
evolving
environment. Within the context of the General Library's mission and
strategic directions, he/she oversees units that blend acquisition and
management of digital content with the more traditional content to
facilitate integrated access to library collections and information
resources. He/she coordinates the development of effective procedures
and
training, and evaluates outcomes to enhance technical services
activities.
The leader convenes the Technical Services Coordinating Group, the
division's management group, to establish goals and objectives, set
priorities, and coordinate the work of the division in order to meet the
challenges of new technologies and user expectations. The leader fosters
an environment of innovation, participation, library-wide collaboration,
and continuous improvement in the division.
Qualifications: Required: MLS and minimum of five years of progressively
responsible experience in technical services in a research library.
Demonstrated understanding of current trends and issues in technical
services in a rapidly changing electronic environment. Proven skills in
information gathering, planning, analysis, and application of technology
to enhance effectiveness in technical services operations. Strong
interpersonal and management skills, creative problem solving, and
decision
making skills. Ability to lead effectively in a team-based environment;
skills and successful experience in selecting, managing and developing
staff. Knowledge of current trends in scholarly publishing, particularly
with regard to electronic resources. Record of active involvement in
professional activities. Preferred: Progressive and broad technical
services experience, prefer especially experience in more than one area
of
technical services operations. Experience with acquisitions and
bibliographic management in an integrated library system, preferably
Sirsi's Unicorn. Familiarity with appropriate information technology
applications, such as OpenURL resolvers and federated searching.

classrooms,
the Goizueta Business Library, the Heilbrun Music and Media Library, the
Electronic Data Services Center, group study rooms, and comfortable
study
space with data connections as well as wireless access throughout the
