The University of New Mexico Libraries has an opening for a
Curator of  Latin American and Iberian Studies. This is a full-time,
12 month faculty position in either tenure-track or tenured status.
The reporting  lines are a joint appointment responsible to the
Assistant Dean for  Public & Research Services and to the Director
of the Collection Management & Resource Acquisitions Department.
The desired start date is January 2006. The faculty rank and tenure
status are negotiable appropriate to qualifications and experience.
The salary is negotiable from a minimum of $50,000.

Education and Experience:

Minimum Qualifications:
o  Masters degree from an ALA-accredited 
Library/Information Science program or international 
equivalent
o  Fluency in Spanish and/or Portuguese
o Fluency in English
o 5 years experience in an academic or research library
o  Experience in collection management of Latin 
American and Iberian materials
o Experience in reference and instruction

 Preferred Qualifications:
o Second advanced degree in Latin American studies 
or a closely related field.
o Experience in grant writing
o Experience in donor relations
o Demonstrated ability to plan and organize projects 
and/or activities
o Demonstrated excellent verbal and written 
communication skills,including the languages required 
under the minimum qualifications listed above.
o Demonstrated  leadership experience
o Demonstrated experience with technological advances 
in scholarly publishing and libraries

 Primary Duties:
To develop, manage, and promote the Latin American 
and Iberian collections in all formats. The collection 
management responsibilities include selecting materials, 
working with approval plans, working with vendors, 
allocating the budget, working with technical services 
to set priorities for processing and preservation of 
materials, and coordinating the activities of other 
selectors working with these collections. Public services 
responsibilities include providing library 
instruction and reference for these areas. Other duties 
include working with the Latin American and Iberian 
Institute (LAII) and other Latin American studies units 
to plan and carry out activities for campus and 
community outreach. The successful candidate will 
work with donors in cooperation with the Libraries' 
Development Office to write grants and develop exhibits.

The successful candidate will serve on the following 
committees:
o Collection Management Team
o Public Services Management Committee
o Management Committee of the Division of Iberian and 
Latin American Resources and Services (DILARES) 

 Environment:
The Division of Iberian and Latin American Resources 
and Services (DILARES) is a multi-departmental unit 
within the UNM University Libraries, encompassing both 
traditional public service, collection development, and 
cataloging operations as well as specialized research, 
fundraising, and outreach functions. DILARES collections 
serve as one of the major repositories of Latin American 
resources in the United States. They contain an estimated 
415,000 monographic volumes (including some 27,000 rare books 
and other scarce imprints housed in Special Collections), 
1,100 current serial subscriptions, more than half a 
million microform units, 13,500 posters, 4,500 photographs, 
approximately 310 cubic feet of manuscript material, and a 
significant array of electronic resources. These holdings 
cover all of the social sciences, humanities, and fine arts 
as well as several professional fields. Within the University 
Libraries, opportunities for research are particularly strong 
in Latin American history, art history, photography, 
and popular graphics, areas in which the Library has built up 
extensive collections of original source material in a 
variety of formats

The Latin American & Iberian Institute (LAII) administers 
UNM's interdisciplinary programs in Latin American Studies 
and supports the university's Latin American and Iberian 
activities in all of UNM's eleven schools and colleges. 
LAII is a designated National Resource Center for Latin 
America (US Dept of Education Title VI) in a consortium 
with New Mexico State University's Center for Latin America 
and Border Studies <http://www.nmsu.edu/%7Eclas/>.

The Collection Management and Resource Acquisitions 
department includes collection management, acquisitions, 
serials receiving, binding, gifts, paying and interlibrary 
loan. The University of New Mexico Libraries 
spends over over $4 million annually on materials, including 
approximately $1 million yearly on electronic resources.

The University of New Mexico Libraries is a member of the 
Association of Research Libraries and the Greater Western 
Library Alliance, and participates in the OCLC system as a 
member of AMIGOS. The University Libraries contains over 
2 million volumes and includes four libraries, 
Centennial Science and Engineering Library, Fine Arts 
Library, Parish Memorial Library (business and economics), 
and Zimmerman Library (education, humanities and social 
sciences), and the Center for Southwest Research and Special 
Collections. The University Libraries is a regional library 
in the Federal Depository Library Program. The Libraries uses 
Innovative Interfaces, Inc. for OPAC, circulation, 
acquisitions and serials control systems. The UNM main campus 
enrolls 26,000 students and employs 2,900 faculty and 5,000 
staff. UNM offers 92 baccalaureate degrees, 67 master's degrees 
and 36 doctoral and professional degrees. The University
