ASSOCIATE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIAN,
TECHNICAL SERVICES AND SCHOLARLY COMMUNICATION
The University of California, Santa Barbara, one of the ten campuses of
the University of California system, invites applications and
nominations
for an Associate University Librarian, Technical Services and Scholarly
Communication. UC, Santa Barbara occupies a picturesque 989-acre palm
and eucalyptus lined plateau overlooking the Pacific Ocean. UCSB joined
the University of California system in 1944. It is ranked as a category
1-research university by the Carnegie Commission, and is an elected
member
of the Association of American Universities. Offering a full range of
undergraduate and graduate degrees, the campus serves some 18,000
students
and has over 900 full time faculty, including many members of leading
academic societies as well as fellows and winners of national academic
honors and Nobel Prize Laureates. The library memberships include ARL,
CRL, CNI, CLIR, and SPARC. The library is also an active participant in
the California Digital Library. The library collections include over
two
million volumes, government documents, microforms, sophisticated
electronic resources, and numerous Special Collections.
Librarians at UCSB are professional academic appointees. They are
entitled to two days per month of vacation leave, one day per month sick
leave, and all other benefits granted to non-faculty academic personnel.
The University has an excellent retirement system, which is coordinated
with Social Security. A selection of group health, dental, vision, and
life insurance plans are offered by the University.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Associate University Librarian, Technical Services
and Scholarly Communication reports to the University Librarian and
serves
as a member of the Library Administrative Group. The AUL has line
responsibility and provides leadership and management for the planning,
development, implementation and assessment of the university libraries
technical services departments and scholarly communication programs.
The AUL, Technical Services and Scholarly Communication has primary
responsibility for the supervision and management of the technical
services departments including acquisitions, cataloging, online catalog
maintenance, electronic resources management, preservation, and serials
management. The AUL will direct the development, implementation, and
evaluation of innovative tools, methods, and strategies for acquiring,
cataloging, processing and preserving materials. The AUL is directly
responsible for relations with vendors and contracts in the conduct of
cataloging, acquisitions, serials, and scholarly communication. The AUL
works with library managers and supervisors to establish goals and
objectives, set priorities, and is responsible for the overall planning,
resource allocation and administration of the technical services
division.
H/she works to ensure the continuous improvement of the quality and
effectiveness of technical services operations in order to meet the
challenge of increasing productivity brought on by new technologies and
user expectations. The technical services departments have over 45 FTE
and a host of student and limited appointment employees.
The AUL assumes responsibility and provides leadership for the library's
scholarly communication programs. Researches and shares information on
the current trends in electronic publishing, open access to networked,
digital information, institutional repositories, and copyright policy
with
faculty and library staff.
The incumbent collaborates closely with the AUL Information and Research
Services in support of information resources management, collection
development and scholarly communication. The AUL chairs the library's
Technical Services Supervisors group. H/she also participates in
University of California systemwide collaborative technical services and
scholarly communication initiatives as well as campus committees.
QUALIFICATIONS: MLS from an ALA-accredited program. A record of
responsible leadership and management experience in technical services.
Knowledge of one or more areas of technical services - cataloging,
acquisitions, serials. Successful supervisory experience in a complex
environment as well as demonstrated decision making, problem solving
ability, and planning skills.
Experience with electronic publishing in academic libraries.
Understanding of trends and new technologies in scholarly communication
and their effect on the academic environment.
Strong user centered approach to technical services. Excellent oral,
written, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to work
effectively in a team environment. A record of professional
accomplishments, and a commitment to fostering the growth and
development
of others. A demonstrated commitment and sensitivity to diversity in
the
workplace.
Experience in preservation and electronic resources management is highly
desirable.
