Head of Acquisitions
Walter Clinton Jackson Library
University of North Carolina Greensboro

The Walter Clinton Jackson Library at the University of North Carolina 
Greensboro invites an innovative, knowledgeable, and energetic
individual to 
head the Acquisitions Department. This individual will provide
leadership for 
and manage all aspects of acquisitions functions.  Reporting to the
Assistant 
Director for Technical Services, this individual plans and provides 
directions in the areas of approval plans, firm orders, standing orders,

journal subscriptions, invoicing, claiming, etc. The Library's annual 
acquisitions budget for both print and electronic materials is over five

million dollars. This is a twelve-month contract, tenured or
tenure-track 
faculty position. 

Major responsibilities
Participate in library-wide planning, policy and priority decisions as a

member of the Library's Administrative Advisory Group; manage the
ordering,
receiving, and invoicing operations; supervise, train, and evaluate nine

support staff; project and track budgets; collect, analyze and use data
to 
improve operations and services; prepare reports; monitor approval plans
and 
gifts; participate in the selecting and communication with vendors and 
publishers; monitor annual materials budgets, and coordinate special
projects 
related materials acquisitions with other departments.  The individual
is 
expected to take a lead role in initiatives which will improve
operational 
efficiency. Other responsibilities will include participation in
collection 
management and may include participation in public or other technical
services, 
depending on the candidate's qualifications and library needs.  The
successful 
candidate will work closely with colleagues in the Library and with
teaching 
faculty.

Required qualifications
ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent; minimum of three years experience in
library 
acquisitions or related professional experience; supervisory experience;
a 
demonstrated understanding of acquisitions operations and its effect on
work 
flow within the Library; knowledge of emerging information technologies
and 
their applications in acquisitions functions; understanding issues in
scholarly 
communications; experience in dealing with licensing and agreement
issues; 
experience with automated acquisitions and serials modules; proficiency
in 
using a variety of MS software.  Excellent interpersonal and
communication 
skills.  Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, students, staff,
and 
donors in the rapidly changing environment of information technology.
Strong 
service orientation is essential.  Demonstrated professional
achievement, 
service, and scholarly/creative activity are required for reappointment
and 
tenure. 

Preferred qualifications
Familiarity with acquisitions and serials control modules (preferably
SIRSI).  
Knowledge of relational databases and MS Office software such as Excel
and 
Access to create needed acquisitions reports. Account and fund
management 
experience in research or academic libraries.

UNCG is a doctoral, research-intensive institution with an enrollment of
over 
15,000, 20 doctoral degree programs, 54 master degree programs, and a
broad

Library 
supports the learning and increasing research missions of the University

through its print and electronic resources, reference and instructional 
services, and other outreach programs, with collections of 1.2 million
volumes, 
over 4,300 current journal subscriptions, more than 26, 000 electronic
journals, 
over 240 electronic databases, and with 80 percent of receiving federal 
government documents. The Jackson Library is a member of OCLC, the
Scholarly 
Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC), and the Association
of 
Southeastern Research Libraries (ASERL).  The University's 190-acre
campus is 
one mile from the center of Greensboro, a city of more than 230,000 and
is in 
the Piedmont Triad (with a population over 1 million), an area of great
natural

Salary and benefits
The salary at the appointment is competitive and depends upon
qualifications and 
experience.  Standard benefits include state or optional (including
TIAA/CREF) 
retirement plans, state health plan, and 24 vacation days per year.
