Subject: ALA meeting announcement

The Heads of Technical Services of Medium-sized Libraries Discussion
Group invites all interested people to join us on Saturday, June 25 from

9:30-11:00 for a discussion on "Professional Careers in Technical
Services". The discussion will be held in Parlor H of the Palmer House.

We will continue the past practice of having several discussions
ongoing at separate tables. The topics the Steering Committe has
identified in advance include:

1. Should the Head of Acquisitions no longer be a librarian level
position? Why or why not?

2. What is the role of preservation, binding, and marking in a time
when many materials are being received shelf ready and electronic
publication is overtaking print?

3. MARC versus NON-MARC metadata specialists--should they co-exist in
the same person? And do they both belong in Technical Services?

4. Why is Technical Services not appealing as a career for recent
library school graduates and what can we do about changing the level of
appeal? If we don't, what happens when we retire?

5. Is AACR3 going to change (diminish) the role of catalogers?

6. Prior technical services experience is often required in postings for

even entry level TS librarian positions. Why? Is it really necessary?
  Or just convenient?

If you have other ideas for discussions on this topic, please come to
the meeting and start your own discussions!

We will also have a short business meeting to elect a new chair. If
you'd like to run for this office, let me know in advance. Nominations
from the floor will be accepted as well.

Hope we'll see you all in Chicago.

JoAnne Deeken
Ougoing Chair
