The General Library consists of the Peter J. Shields Library, the
Carlson 
Health Sciences Library and the Physical Sciences & Engineering Library
in 
Davis, and the Medical Center Library in Sacramento. For more

Responsibilities: Manage and supervise the Serials Records Section,
which is 
responsible for ensuring the availability of serial materials for
Shields 
Library and the Physical Sciences & Engineering Library. Activities
include 
oversight of ordering, receiving, preparing material for housing,
invoice 
payment, vendor relations, and maintaining the quality and accuracy of 
subscription, bibliographic and holdings records. Responsible for the 
acquisition of electronic resources licensed by UCD and local management
of 
consortial titles acquired by the California Digital Library.

Requirements: Demonstrated management skills to efficiently manage a
complex, 
specialized unit. Demonstrated supervisory skills and ability to deal
fairly 
and knowledgeably in personnel matters. Ability to interpret staff
personnel 
policies and union contracts. Skills to interview, select, train,
evaluate, 
motivate and counsel/discipline employees. Organizational and planning
skills 
and ability to determine priorities, delegate work and establish goals. 
Detailed knowledge of library tools and resources to do bibliographic 
searching, verification and problem resolution, including an integrated 
library system (such as Aleph), a major bibliographic utility (such as
OCLC 
or RLIN), an online union list catalog (such as MELVYL). Detailed
knowledge 
of serials/serials practices, preferably in an academic library. Working

knowledge of the serials trade to evaluate supplier effectiveness and
ordering 
procedures. Familiarity with electronic journals, web resources, and
licensing 
practices. Excellent writing skills to update manuals, prepare memos,
and 
clearly and concisely prepare performance evaluations, position
descriptions, 
or employee development worksheets. Skills to recognize essential
bibliographic 
elements in English and on foreign language materials. Excellent
interpersonal 
skills to interact tactfully and diplomatically with a variety of people
from 
within and outside the Library. Excellent verbal and written skills to 
communicate in person, by telephone, or e-mail. Supplemental

smoking in the building. Physical Requirements: Work in close proximity
to 
others, with frequent interaction and interruptions; frequent movement
within 
the department and to and from other departments/areas; frequent
shelving/
retrieval of books and materials (weighing up to 10 pounds onto shelving

ranging from 5" to 82" high); movement of loaded book trucks (weighing
up to 
700 pounds) through congested work areas; operation of keyboard and
computer 
equipment for extended periods of time; interpret fine/standard print, 
handwritten/penciled annotations/requests, computer printouts; and read
CRT 
screens.
