Eastern Michigan University, a public, comprehensive metropolitan 
university offering programs in the arts, sciences and professions, is 
currently searching for faculty for the 2005-06 academic year 
(appointment at assistant professor unless otherwise specified). 
Founded in 1849, the University enrolls nearly 25,000 students who are 
served by over 2,000 faculty and staff, both on-campus, off-campus and 
electronically. Located in culturally and environmentally diverse 
southeastern Michigan, characterized by metropolitan growth and 
economic transformation, the University is in an environment rich in 
academic, research, technological and recreational resources.

#F0592 - Collection Development Librarian 

Appointment Description 

"  Tenure-track faculty position, available Fall, 2005 

"  Appointment will be at the Assistant Professor rank which requires 
ALA-accredited library or information science degree and 18 additional 
graduate credit hours OR 5 years professional library experience. 

"  This position is a 12 month annualized academic appointment.

Position Description

The EMU Library seeks an innovative collection development librarian 
to coordinate the acquisition and maintenance of library resources in 
a variety of formats. The collection development librarian will 
provide leadership in articulating the direction, balance, and 
emphasis of print, media, and electronic resources. Negotiation of 
licenses with vendors will be a key responsibility. Working closely 
with other librarians in a collegial team environment, the collection 
development librarian will help to determine collection development 
needs and priorities as dictated by the campus's academic programs and 
will lead in the establishment and review of selection and retention 
policies.

Responsibilities 

"  Balance allocations by subject and format, and negotiate licenses 
for e-content. 

"  Work with colleges, departments, and programs on the library's 
responsiveness to new courses, degrees, accreditation, and changing 
needs. 

"  Cooperate and communicate effectively with colleagues, 
administrators, campus officers such as the University Attorney, as 
well as vendors and other external agencies. 

"  Some public service duties such as reference desk, with some 
evening and weekend hours, virtual reference, instruction, and liaison 
to academic departments may be assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

Required 

"  ALA-accredited degree in library or information science 

"  Five years minimum professional experience, with at least 3 years 
in an academic environment 

"  At least one year of experience in coordinating resource 
allocations across multiple disciplines 

"  Experience in liaison work with faculty or department members 

"  Strong verbal and written communication skills 

"  Successful leadership experience demonstrated by a record of: 
committee chairmanship, project management, leadership of small and 
large discussion groups, production of effective policies, procedures, 
and workflows 

"  Competency with PC spreadsheet and database software 

"  Experience in selection of monographic, serial, multimedia, and 
electronic materials for an academic library collection 

"  Knowledge of the book trade and the serials subscription business 

"  Demonstrated commitment to professional development and ability to 
meet the requirements of a tenure-track appointment. 

Preferred 

"  A second graduate degree 

"  Experience in providing reference and/or instruction services 

"  Experience with licensing of electronic resources 

"  Experience with library acquisitions work, including vendor 
evaluation 

"  Experience in grant writing 

"  A record of active participation in local, regional, and national 
library organizations 

"  Experience with cooperative inter-library resource sharing 
initiatives
