Subject: Position Announcement
Acquisitions Librarian, Bibliographic Services, Mathematical Reviews
Since its founding in 1940, Mathematical Reviews(MR), a division of the
American Mathematical Society located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, has served
researchers and scholars in the mathematical sciences by providing
timely
information on articles and books that contain new contributions to
mathematical research. The MR Database, containing MR information back
to
1940, is now maintained electronically in MathSciNet.
Since the vast majority of serials and monographs indexed by MR are
obtained as complimentary review copy or on exchange from each publisher
or institution, a great deal of emphasis is placed on maintaining
ongoing
and accurate source records. The Acquisitions Librarian directly
supervises
an acquisitions staff of approximately six full-time employees in
maintaining those source contacts, insuring continuing delivery of
current
titles, claiming missing items, and arranging for new subscriptions and
book orders. The acquisitions staff is also responsible for:
bibliographic
data entry and upkeep; creation and maintenance of on-line serials and
publisher authority records; proofreading of new serials information for
both MR and Current Mathematical Publications(CMP); and collection
maintenance.
The Acquisitions Librarian will also be responsible for maintenance or
creation of documentation relating to acquisitions policies and
procedures. The preferred candidate will participate in the design and
testing of all new acquisitions database applications and in any
acquisitions-related special projects. The Acquisitions Librarian will
serve as supervisor for personnel for Bibliographic Services in the
absence
of the Department Manager.
The successful candidate must have an MLS or three years of equivalent
experience. Excellent command of both oral and written English will be
required, and working knowledge of non-English languages viewed
positively. Experience in the design and/or documentation of
bibliographic
database applications and procedures will be well regarded, as will
supervisory experience.
Salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience.
Applicants who interview for the position will be expected to furnish a
list of three references familiar with their qualifications for this
position. The review of applications will begin immediately and continue
until the position is filled.
Please send letter of interest and resume to: Office Manager, P.O. Box
8604, Ann Arbor, MI 48107-8604.
The American Mathematical Society is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
