ACQUISITIONS LIBRARIAN
Simon Fraser University Library invites applications for the new
position
of Acquisitions Librarian, reporting to the Associate University
Librarian
(AUL), Processing and Systems. This position will be attractive to a
very
dynamic, innovative individual who is experienced with automated library
systems and has a keen interest in broader issues of acquisitions
management and who is highly motivated to embrace new technologies and
develop new services. A demonstrated commitment to and success in
consultative management is essential. The successful applicant for this
position will possess excellent communication and training skills.
SETTING
The newly consolidated Acquisitions Section amalgamates two units with a
total of 9 full time, very knowledgeable and effective staff. The
Acquisitions Section handles all acquisitions for the Bennett, Belzberg
and
Surrey libraries using extensive approval plans as well as firm and form
orders in all formats, and includes ordering, receiving and payment
activities.
The Acquisitions Section works closely with the Collections Management
Division.
Simon Fraser University is a comprehensive university with approximately
16,000 FTE students. The main campus and library is located in Burnaby,
with satellite campuses and libraries in downtown Vancouver and Surrey.
The W.A.C. Bennett (Main) library is in Burnaby. Our web site is located

<http://www.lib.sfu.ca/> The SFU Library serves an ethnically diverse
student population including many mature or returning students, most of
whom live off-campus and many of whom work part-time while attending
university. Students from the social sciences are especially active
users of
the W.A.C. Bennett Library. Our highly evolved networked environment
provides access to online indexes and databases including full-text
resources, as well as to a large number of online user services.
Our integrated library system is Innovative Interfaces Inc. (III), both
Innopac and Millennium, which interfaces with other campus and vendor
systems, utilizing EDI and MARC record downloads.
ASSIGNMENT
1 Provide leadership, management, supervision and planning for the
Acquisitions Section.
2 Keep abreast of developments in acquisitions and adopt and implement
new
technologies and methods.
3 Work with the Head, Cataloguing Division, Serials Supervisor and Head,
Collections Management to ensure efficient processing and Collections-
related procedures and workflows, and liaise with other library
divisions
and personnel to achieve the best possible service to users of the
library.
4 Liaise with the University Finance Dept. and Library vendors.
5 Recommend policy and work with staff to develop procedures and
document
the same.
6 In conjunction with the Head, Cataloguing Division and Library Systems
Division troubleshoot the III Acquisitions module, keeping up with
changes
and opportunities for utilizing developments to improve acquisitions
processes.
7 Create training materials and train staff on new procedures and
processes.
8 Provide selected service with other library units (e.g. Cataloguing,
Public service points, etc.). Note: to be based on time available,
experience and interest, and mutually agreed upon with the AUL
Processing
and Systems.
9 Direct special projects and work with other library staff on project
teams and committees.
10 Develop professional knowledge and skills on a continuing basis.
QUALIFICATIONS
1 MLS from an ALA accredited school or equivalent.
2 5 years professional experience, and/or a combination of equivalent
experience in one or more fields relevant to library services.
3 Supervisory or related experience such as demonstrated successful team
or
project lead assignments.
4 Demonstrated skill in planning and delivering training.
5 Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with all library staff in
order to improve library service delivery to the public and to work
effectively in a collegial team environment.
6 Familiarity with trends in acquisitions and collections management.
7 Experience with one or more processing modules of an integrated
library
system.
1 Superior communication and interpersonal skills, both verbal and
written,
including demonstrated technical writing ability.
2 Demonstrated ability to manage change in an automated environment.
3 Library acquisitions experience preferred.
4 Collections management experience preferred.
