Periodicals Librarian I.
The Richland County Public Library, Columbia, SC, is accepting
applications
for "Periodicals Librarian I".
The Richland County Public Library system is a progressive,
highly-ranked
library system serving a population of 320,000 (metro area is 500,000).
Location: Periodicals Department, RCPL Main Library, 1431 Assembly St.,
Columbia, SC 29201.

Hours: 37.5 hours per week, including one evening per week and every
third
weekend.
Salary: $33,559.50 per year, plus benefits.
Essential Functions:
Answers reference questions and provides periodicals information for
both
walk-in and telephone patrons, utilizing print sources, electronic
databases,
microfilm sources, and automated catalog.
Provides advisory services and bibliographic instruction.
Processes and checks-in materials in absence of library assistant.
Organizes and supervises the maintenance of periodicals files and
databases.
Assists with supervision and training of professional and
non-professional
staff - clerks, shelvers, substitutes, and volunteers.
Serves as night supervisor, and acts as department supervisor in absence
of
department manager.
Assists Periodicals Manager in planning for and operation of the
Periodicals
Department.
Other Important Responsibilities:
Assists with technical processing of serials records for new titles,
title
changes, frequency changes, etc.
Assists with planning, developing materials for, and conducting library
research skills and workshops.
Assists with indexing of local and regional magazines.
May assist with subscription renewal tasks for periodicals materials.
Prepares and maintains statistical reports for volume count, annual
report,
and other projects as assigned.
Assists with selection and de-selection of periodicals materials.
May assist with management of microfilm collection, including splicing
film,
and preventative maintenance of microfilm readers.
Keeps informed of professional developments, attends professional
meetings and
job related trainings.
May prepare promotional materials, tip sheets, and web site
informational
features related to periodicals collection.
Conducts orientation tours of the department.
May participate in special activities and projects as assigned.
May work in other public service areas as needed.
Performs other associated duties as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. ALA-accredited MLS degree.
2. Eligible for or holds South Carolina librarian certification.
3. Specialized subject knowledge or skills developed through work
experience
and/or education where appropriate (highly desirable for this particular
position:
management/supervisory skills developed through relevant prior
experience; and
knowledge of Office products-Access, Excel, and Powerpoint; knowledge of
Library
of Congress subject headings, authority control, MARC bibliographic
format).
