Subject: Meeting Announcement (Medium Heads -- ALA Midwinter)

The Heads of Technical Services of Medium Sized Libraries will meet
Saturday, Jan. 16 at the Westin Hotel, Essex North East Room. This
meeting is open to everyone. Many of our usual attendees are NOT heads
of technical services. Many are heads of TS departments (cataloging,
acq, etc.) Others just work in those departments and others are just
interested in the topics. All are welcome. We really like diverse
views!

We will have 8 discussion topics at midwinter. Attendees will choose
one, but we're willing to consider new topics or drop some of these if
YOU want to discuss something else. Please come!

The overall theme is "Quicker, cheaper, better: Pick two"

1. The myth of the perfect cataloging record and how to get your
catalogers to give it up and keep your public service areas informed.

2. How do you decide what to give up when the department is asked to
take on something else?

3. Should check in of periodicals and serials be continued or not?
What purpose is it serving at what price?

4. Pre-order searching: What's that?

5. How to keep staff morale high when you ask them to "give up" what
they liked most in their jobs?

6. What aspects of TS work can be outsourced? How do you select,
monitor and evaluate outsourcing partners?

7. Expertise declining in Tech Serv in areas such as languages,
subjects, formats: how low can quality go or where can we get the
expertise?

8. Sharing the work: sharing the responsibility. If we ask selectors to
actually ORDER from a vendor, what training do they need? And who's
responsible if they order duplicates, for example?
