THE UCSD LIBRARIES - University of California, San Diego 

Assistant Department Head, Acquisitions Department

Preferred appointment level: Associate Librarian I - Associate Librarian
VI 
(salary range of $42,996-$60,132).

The Libraries of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) seek 
applications from a knowledgeable, experienced, energetic, and
innovative 
professional to help provide leadership to a dynamic and enthusiastic 
acquisitions staff in support of excellence in a research library of a 
rapidly growing highly ranked university.  

Responsibilities:  Assists the Department Head in the overall leadership
of 
the Acquisitions Department.  Has responsibility for all aspects related
to 
the acquisition and maintenance of the libraries' licensed electronic 
resources, including license negotiations and liaison with the
California 
Digital Library, UC campus liaisons, and UCSD bibliographers.  Assumes 
administrative responsibility for the Serials and Electronic Resources 
Division which consists of the Division Head and 7 FTE library
assistants 
and 3 FTE student assistants.  Assists the Department Head with
collection 
analysis, the development of new policies, procedures, and operational 
processes, the preparation of reports, and the introduction of new 
technologies.  Undertakes special projects as required and serves as
Acting 
Department Head during the Department Head's absence. 

Required Qualifications:  Professional degree from a library school or 
other appropriate degree or equivalent experience in one or more fields 
relevant to library services.  Experience in library acquisitions.  
Experience with licensing agreements, copyright issues, database
software, 
and evaluation of electronic resources.  Demonstrated experience and 
ability to respond creatively to rapidly changing library and vendor 
environments.  Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving

skills.  Relevant knowledge of link resolving software standards, 
familiarity with Project Counter, and experience with an integrated
library 
system.  Customer service orientation, excellent communication skills
and 
the ability to communicate with a diverse clientele.  UCSD librarians
are 
expected to participate in library-wide and system-wide planning and 
governance, to be able to work comfortably in a shared decision-making 
environment, and to be professionally active.

Desired Qualifications:  Experience with an electronic resources
management 
system and supervisory experience are highly desirable.
