Sonoma State University Library
Anticipated Permanent Full-Time Position (Tenure-Track)
Senior Assistant Librarian - Technical Services
Anticipated start date is negotiable between the dates of April 1 and
August
1, 2005
THE UNIVERSITY: Sonoma State University is one of the 23 campuses of the
California State University. Located in the Sonoma County wine country,
48
miles north of San Francisco, the University has an enrollment of
approximately 8,000 students with 500 faculty. The University is
organized
into six schools: Arts and Humanities, Business and Economics,
Education,
Extended Education, Science and Technology, and Social Sciences. Within
the
traditional structure is an interdisciplinary program of liberal
studies.
The University offers bachelor's degrees in 42 fields and master's
degrees
in 15.
THE LIBRARY: Completed in 2000, the University Library in the Jean and
Charles Schulz Information Center is positioned as the cultural center
of
campus and serves as a resource for the entire region. The University
Library
maintains a high profile on campus, hosting workshops, cultural events
and
exhibitions. Our Information Commons promotes a public computing
environment
that encourages the integration of access to library resources with
software
applications.
The Library has a regular and temporary staff of 40, including 9 FTE
library
faculty, and approximately 40 student employees. The collection includes
approximately 600,000 volumes, more than 1,000 active print periodical
subscriptions, over 15,000 online journals and databases, 1.5 million
microforms, 75,000 government documents, and a growing collection of
audio and
video sources and software. The University Library is fully networked,
including wireless access; uses Innovative Interfaces as its integrated
library system; has an ASRS (automated storage and retrieval system);
and has
a total annual budget of approximately $2.5 million.

DUTIES OF THE POSITION:
The University Library in the Jean and Charles Schulz Information Center
at
Sonoma State University seeks a motivated and progressive professional
to join
a fast-paced and forward thinking technical services department.
Incumbent
will have the opportunity to develop skills in all areas of technical
services
(acquisitions, cataloging, serials, processing, microforms, preservation
and
binding), and implement new technology developments including metadata
and
digital library initiatives. Some evening and weekend hours may be
required.
Responsibilities may include:
* Cataloging materials in all formats, including serials and
electronic
resources, using OCLC and the INNOPAC/Millennium system, and applying
metadata
where appropriate;
* Coordinating database maintenance;
* Coordinating acquisitions functions;
* Coordinating all aspects of government documents;
* Participating in the management of the Innovative Interfaces
Millennium
system, including resolving hardware and software problems;
* Documenting procedures and local practices consistent with
service
expectations;
* Participating in collection development and faculty liaison
responsibilities;
* Representing the library on campus-wide committees and teams;
* Assist the library with program assessment.
QUALIFICATIONS: To be recommended for appointment, the candidate must
have:
Required:
* ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent;
* Current awareness of new trends, standards, and emerging
technologies in
cataloging and technical services, including those related to digital
libraries;
* Willingness to learn and apply emerging metadata standards such
as Dublin
Core and EAD;
* Knowledge of AACR2, MARC, LCSH, LC classification, OCLC, CONSER
standards
and integrated library systems;
* Experience or knowledge in one or more of the following areas:
acquisitions, cataloging, and serials management;
* Strong public service commitment and ability to work
collegially;
* Effective analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills;
proven
ability to recognize problems and propose a range of solutions to
facilitate
library wide decision-making;
* Continuing commitment to professional development;
* Ability to balance multiple responsibilities simultaneously;
* Flexibility in response to changing circumstances in the
academic
environment;
* Willingness to provide programmatic direction and oversight as
needed.
The successful candidate will have excellent oral, written, analytical,
and
interpersonal communication skills, including ability to document
procedures; a
thorough understanding of how information is organized, accessed, and
used to
support the mission of the university; and the ability to work
independently and
flexibly in a team environment.
Desirable:
* One to two years' cataloging experience utilizing current
cataloging rules
and MARC formats;
* Experience with Innovative Interfaces and OCLC;
* Familiarity with HTML, SGML, XML, and emerging metadata
standards, and their
application in libraries;
* Demonstrated ability to work both independently and
collaboratively;
* Knowledge of database design and management;
* Strong computer and technology skills, including Web design,
development,
and management;
* Knowledge of e-journal and e-book management;
* Basic knowledge of programming/scripting languages such as PERL,
HTML, XML,
C++, or MySQL;
* Familiarity with digital image and text creation, and digital
production
using national standards.
To be recommended for tenure, the candidate must demonstrate
satisfactory performance
in four areas: teaching effectiveness; scholarship, research, creative
achievement
and professional development; service to the University; and public
service and
service to the community. Although tenure may be granted at any time,
contract
provisions specify that "the normal period of probation shall be a total
of six (6)
years of full-time probationary service and credited service, if any.
Any deviation
from the normal six (6) year probationary period shall be the decision
of the
President following his/her consideration of recommendations from the
department or
equivalent unit and appropriate administrator(s)." Tenure is required
for promotion
above the level of Associate Librarian.
RANK and SALARY: : Appointment will be at the rank of Senior Assistant
Librarian,
salary range of $50,100 - $55,000, commensurate with qualifications and
experience.
Actual hiring salary within this range is dependent upon educational
preparation and
experience.
