Assistant Director for Technical Services (new position)
Jackson Library, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro
Jackson Library is seeking a dynamic and innovative individual to
provide leadership in technical services. The Assistant Director for
Technical Services will play a leadership role in strengthening and
advancing library services by increasing the Librarys ability to take
advantage of developments and enhancements in technology and vendor
services; managing all aspects of technical services, including
cataloging, acquisitions, serials processing, and conservation/bindery;
initiating and developing strategies that maximize efficiency,
effectiveness, and productivity while maintaining high quality;
participating in the planning, implementation, and assessment of
technical services modules for a new integrated library system;
supporting the advancement of digital initiatives; and facilitating
communication and collaboration within Technical Services and with other
library units. The ADTS may participate in collection development
activities. Reporting to the University Librarian, the ADTS will be a
member of the Administrative Advisory Group and Administrative Council,
which serve in an advisory capacity, and serve as the technical services
liaison to SOLINET, OCLC, and other materials and services vendors, as
appropriate.
Responsibilities: Collaborate with others to plan, initiate, integrate,
and evaluate technical service operations; plan, implement, and assess
functional efficacy of technical service modules of the integrated
library system and other related technologies; participate in the
hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of all department
personnel (currently 5.5 FTE library faculty and 18.5 FTE staff in
acquisitions, catalog, and bindery units); collect and evaluate data and
other information to use in improving services and preparing reports;
evaluate current and evolving standards in cataloging and other methods
of access control and develop internal policies and procedures to
optimize access to information; work closely with other library and
campus units to implement user-centered access to information in all
formats; encourage and support faculty and staff development and
training.
Qualifications: Required: ALA-accredited Masters degree in Library
Science or its equivalent; recent and significant experience in one or
more areas of technical services in an academic research library, with
broad knowledge of related areas; demonstrated evidence of successful
supervisory and management experience; experience with integrated online
systems, preferably DRA/SIRSI; thorough knowledge and understanding of
current and emerging standards, trends, and technologies in libraries,
especially as they relate to technical services and digital libraries;
understanding of metadata applications and web-based services and
collections; strong planning and organization skills; and excellent
interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. The successful
candidate must be able to work successfully in a collegial environment
and be a creative problem-solver. Preferred: Experience with the
application of cataloging standards and practice as they apply to all
formats.
Salary: Competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Environment: Jackson Library supports the learning and research missions
of the University through its traditional and electronic resources and
active outreach programs. The position is a twelve-month, tenure-track
faculty position available October 1, 2004. Demonstrated professional
achievement, service, and scholarly/creative activity are required for
reappointment and tenure. Standard state benefits include state or
optional (including TIAA/CREF) retirement plans, health plan, and 24
