University of Wisconsin-Madison

The University of Wisconsin-Madison, General
Library System (GLS) is seeking an innovative and
flexible individual to serve as Head of the
Acquisitions and Serials Department.   The title
of Academic Librarian or Senior Academic Librarian
will be assigned depending on the credentials of
the successful candidate.  Salary:  minimum
$41,828.  Benefits include 22 vacation days, sick
leave, group health and life insurance and a state
retirement plan.

The Acquisitions and Serials Department, one of
two departments within the Central Technical
Services (CTS) Division, is comprised of four
units:  Documents, Fiscal, Order, and Serials
Control.   The Head of this Department directly
supervises 5.5 professional staff and indirectly
is responsible for the work of 30 FTEs which
includes professional, classified and student
staff.   The CTS Division serves 14 campus
libraries within the GLS.   The position reports
directly to the Associate Director for Collection
Development and Technical Services.

Principal responsibilities include planning,
coordinating, and directing the activities and
workflow of the Acquisitions and Serials
Department.  This department processes annually
over 30,000 firm orders and maintains 30,000
journal and other serial titles; expenditures
total more than $7,000,000.  This position is also
primarily responsible for reviewing and approving
licenses for electronic resources; serves as the
primary contact with vendors regarding services;
coordinates the library's approval plans, blanket
orders and other agreements in consultation with
the subject specialists; negotiates vendor
discounts and service charges and coordinates
end-of-year fiscal year closeout.  This position
also assists and collaborates in the overall
coordination of acquisitions policies and
procedures across campus libraries and
participates in acquisitions-related matters among
the libraries of the University of Wisconsin
System and the Committee on Institutional
Cooperation (CIC).

Required Qualifications:

- MLS/MLIS degree from an ALA-accredited library
program.
- Minimum of five years' acquisitions experience
preferably in a research or academic library
- Thorough knowledge of acquisitions business
practices and experience with the vendor/publisher
environment
- Significant experience in fiscal management
- Experience with an integrated library management
system such as Voyager
- Excellent analytical and organizational skills
- Familiarity with licensing and intellectual
property issues
- Supervisory experience
- Excellent skills in oral and written communication
- Ability to demonstrate leadership in a complex
and evolving academic environment
- Familiarity with bibliographic control issues
and bibliographic utilities

Desired Qualifications:

- Ability to function in and promote a
collaborative working environment
- Strong service orientation
- Ability to work with a variety of foreign languages
