The Pennsylvania State University Libraries
Head Acquisitions Services
The Pennsylvania State University Libraries seeks a dynamic and creative
librarian with a strong background in acquisitions management for the
position of Head of Acquisitions Services.
Responsibilities: Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Technical and
Access
Services, the incumbent will be responsible for all aspects related to
the
acquisition of monographic materials in all formats for University Park
and
19 of Penn State's 23 campuses. The department is comprised of 18 FTE
staff
positions organized into three self-directed work teams which are
responsible
for the expenditure of an annual approval plans and monographic
collections
budget of over $3.6 million. The incumbent will provide strategic
leadership
and coordinate departmental, divisional and Libraries-wide planning and
activities, including personnel management, departmental operations and
information resources budget management, setting and communicating
priorities, and providing guidance in the use of the latest
technologies.
The department head will play a key role in the guidance and continual
management of the integrated library management system, SIRSI, as well
as the
investigation of new means of exchanging acquisitions and bibliographic
information between libraries and vendors. Penn State is actively
involved in
national initiatives, and requires a department head with a demonstrated
understanding of current trends in the field. As a member of the Dean's
Library Council, the Head of Acquisitions Services participates in
Libraries-
wide planning, policy-making activities, and library governance. The
successful candidate will be expected to be active in research,
scholarship
and service as a faculty member at Penn State.
Qualifications: Required: ALA accredited MLS or equivalent degree;
demonstrated experience with an online integrated library system; three
to
five years experience with progressive responsibility in library
technical
services; budgetary experience; ability to assess, develop and implement
new
information technologies; and a commitment to diversity and to serving
the
needs of a diverse population.
Preferred: Excellent planning, analytical, interpersonal, and oral and
written communication skills; the ability to lead and work
collaboratively in
a team environment; knowledge of current issues and trends in library
acquisitions and collection development; thorough knowledge of
acquisitions
business practices; and experience with the vendor/publisher
environment.
Salary & Benefits: This is a tenure track faculty position. Evidence of
potential for tenure and promotion will be considered. Salary and rank
are
commensurate with experience. Excellent fringe benefits include liberal

are located at University Park and 23 other campuses throughout
Pennsylvania,
with about 6,000 faculty and nearly 42,000 students at University Park,
and a
total of 82,000 students system wide. The University Park campus is set
in
State College, a university town located in the heart of central
Pennsylvania.
