HEAD OF ACQUISITIONS  - BINGHAMTON UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES, 
STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK

Binghamton University Libraries seek an enthusiastic, collegial, and
service-oriented Head of Acquisitions to serve as an integral part of a
team providing high quality services for library patrons.  The Head
supervises staff and manages the operation of a highly automated 
department, which includes firm order and approval plan purchasing and 
processing, copy cataloging, monographic repair and binding, gift 
processing, and mail and supply distribution.  The incumbent oversees 
the Aleph500 acquisitions module including cost accounting and the 
monographic materials budgets, and interacts with book vendors, 
bibliographers, faculty, and staff.  A strong commitment to service and 
patron access to information is essential. The incumbent reports to the 
Associate Director for Technical Services and Budget.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The Head of Acquisitions coordinates the selection, supervision,
training, and evaluation of the Unit's staff; maintains overall 
responsibility for the Acquisitions Unit's workflow, procedures, and 
output; maintains in-process control of all received items; compiles 
monthly and annual activity reports; reviews book purchase requests 
and assigns vendors for monographic orders and oversees all Aleph500 
acquisitions activities; monitors expenditures and fund accounts for 
firm and approval items; monitors the status of various funds in 
consultation with administrators and subject bibliographers;
monitors and evaluates the performance of firm order and approval plan
vendors; coordinates monographic copy cataloging routines performed by
Acquisitions staff in consultation with the Cataloging Services Unit;
coordinates and supervises the receiving and staging of gift materials;
provides acknowledgement information for individuals donating materials;
coordinates the receipt, distribution, and shipping for the Libraries'
mail; keeps abreast of developing trends in book publishing, library
automation and technical service functions as related to the Acquisitions 
Unit; participates in professional activities and committee assignments 
within the Libraries, on campus and in professional association.

The successful candidate will show evidence of creativity, initiative,
and flexibility; demonstrate the ability to contribute to a 
technologically dynamic organization and work collaboratively within 
the Libraries, on campus, and in professional associations. We seek a 
team player who will help shape the future of a growing research library.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
MLS degree from an ALA accredited institution; successful post-MLS
acquisitions experience in an academic setting or related environment;
experience using an integrated library system and at least one national
bibliographic utility; demonstrated successful supervisory experience
and ability to work effectively with individuals and groups; excellent
planning, leadership, communication and interpersonal skills; knowledge of 
current trends in publishing, library acquisitions and automation; ability 
to foster change and work with others in a team environment; evidence of
professional growth, service activities and contribution to the library 
profession to meet faculty criteria for promotion and tenure; a commitment 
to providing a high level of support services.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Advanced degree or graduate coursework; understanding of collection
development issues; demonstrated successful experience in cataloging,
serials, and/or authority control; experience with Ex Libris, OCLC
and/or RLIN; familiarity with copy cataloging practices; experience with
spreadsheet and other software applications; working knowledge of at
least one modern European language.

Located in the Southern Tier of upstate New York, Binghamton University

The Binghamton University library system is composed of the Glenn G.
Bartle Library, serving the social sciences and humanities, and the 
Science Library, a branch library serving the Science and Mathematics 
Divisions of Harpur College, the Decker School of Nursing, and the 
Watson School of Engineering.

Finalists invited for an interview will demonstrate communication 
skills and knowledge of trends in librarianship through a presentation 
to library faculty, staff, and other members of the University community.

This is a tenure track position with initial appointment at the Senior
Assistant Librarian or Associate Librarian rank.  Competitive salary
commensurate with qualifications and experience, plus excellent benefits
