Position: Assistant Head of the Monographic Acquisitions and Rapid
Cataloging Department

Library: Northwestern University Library (Evanston, Ill.)
JOB SUMMARY: Assists in all aspects of management of the Monographic
Acquisitions and Rapid Cataloging (MARC) Department, a large technical
services unit (currently 16 staff) responsible for the order, receipt, and
copy cataloging of monographic publications. Specific responsibilities
include direct supervision of 9 full time library assistants; management of
day-to-day workflows and assignments in the department; creation and
maintenance of policy and procedural documentation. The assistant head
answers questions and solves problems related to both acquisitions and
cataloging. The assistant head works closely with the head and one non-
exempt staff supervisor within the department to ensure consistent
communication with materials selectors, vendors, and other library units.
The assistant head also works with managers in other technical services
departments to coordinate policies, procedures, and work flows.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required: MLS from an ALA-accredited library school or the equivalent
combination of education and relevant library experience; sufficient
cataloging knowledge to support training, policy, procedural formulation,
and problem-solving for copy cataloging work; demonstrated supervisory
potential; excellent time management and collaboration skills; ability to
communicate effectively orally and in writing; interest in and understanding
of production processes; interest in and willingness to learn acquisitions
duties and issues; familiarity with at least one West European language.
Preferred: successful supervisory experience; acquisitions work experience;
experience using the Dewey decimal classification system for call number
assignment; experience using OCLC and an integrated library management
system; demonstrated ability to write clear, detailed procedural
documentation.
ENVIRONMENT
Northwestern University is a major private university that participates in
programs of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation. The library system
serving the University includes the Northwestern University Library, three
branch libraries on the Evanston campus, and four libraries on the Chicago
campus. Northwestern University Library is a member of the Association of
Research Libraries. The holdings of the libraries total over 4 million
volumes. The MARC Department is one of four departments in the Technical
Services Division of the University Library. Work in technical services
departments is supported by automated systems, including the Voyager
integrated library management system, the OCLC bibliographic utility, and a
locally developed catalogers toolkit.
SALARY: $40,000 minimum.
