The University of Cincinnati invites applications for the position of Head,
Monographs Department. This position represents an excellent opportunity for
a bold, innovative, knowledgeable, and service-oriented individual to bring
vision and energy to a unit involved in all aspects of monographs, from
ordering and receiving to cataloging. The Head of the Monographs Department
must be committed to quality service, streamlining operations, staff
development, and team building.

Environment:  Founded in 1819, the University of Cincinnati, a
state-supported, Research I institution cited as one of the nation's "Best
Colleges for the Real World," offers 450 academic programs on five campuses,
including a major medical center. Total enrollment is approximately 33,000,

Qualifications:  Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program or
equivalent advanced degree in library or information science. Minimum of 3
years progressively responsible professional experience in an academic or
research library setting. Substantial experience as a cataloger in an
academic library, including experience with government documents; original
cataloging; strong knowledge of AACR2r, Library of Congress Rule
Interpretations, Library of Congress classification and subject heading
schemes; MARC formats and the structure and function of automated
bibliographic control systems; and cooperative cataloging efforts. Strong
commitment to enhancing public access to library resources. Ability to
supervise and develop staff and manage change in a team environment. Ability
to work effectively independently and in teams. Excellent interpersonal
skills; ability to communicate clearly, knowledgeably, and personably, both
orally and in writing; strong service orientation; and a commitment to
professional service. Demonstrated record of ongoing professional
development and contribution; scholarship; and ability to meet university
promotion and tenure requirements.

JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION:		Head, Monographs Department
EFFECTIVE:		April 1, 2004
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Trains, supervises, evaluates and encourages
growth and development of department staff responsible for cataloging,
receiving, and acquisitions. Serves as the lead monographic materials
cataloger, performing original cataloging of print and non-print materials
(including government documents) in a variety of languages and subject
areas. Prepares written reports and maintains appropriate statistics and
records. Is a member of the University Libraries' Management Council.
Participates in Technical Services and University Libraries planning and in
library committees, meetings, and workshops. Helps foster the development
and success of University Libraries.
RELATIONSHIP AND AUTHORITY: Reports to and receives direction
from the Assistant Dean for Technical Services and Budget.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:	1.	Plans, budgets, directs, and reports
on the activities of the Monographs Department, and coordinates activities
with other departments. Serves as lead monographic materials cataloger,
performing original cataloging (including description and subject analysis)
of print and non-print materials (including government documents) in a
variety of languages and subject areas. Develops, in coordination with
others, cataloging procedures and documentation.
	2.	Trains, supervises and evaluates seven professional and
paraprofessional staff, who perform all levels of cataloging, including
original cataloging, classification, and contributed copy cataloging. Also
supervises the Monographs Ordering Unit Head.
	3.	Maintains an understanding of current issues and trends in
national and international standards for organization and bibliographic
control of information resources, and shares that knowledge, as appropriate,
with staff in Technical Services.
	4.	Designs cataloging procedures and documentation, in
coordination with the Serials and Electronic Resources Cataloging Unit Head
and others.
	5.	As a member of Management Council, participates in the
decision-making process of University Libraries.
	6.	Actively participates on the Database Management Team, whose
responsibility is authority control, database management and quality
control. Participates in Technical Services and University Libraries
planning, serves on library-wide committees, task forces, and teams.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:	1.	Master's degree in library science

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

	1.	Successful experience supervising, training and coordinating
cataloging staff.
	2.	Experience cataloging in OCLC or another bibliographic
utility.
 	3.	Experience with OhioLINK or another consortial arrangement.
	4.	Experience with Innovative Interfaces Inc., or another
integrated library system.
	5.	Experience with and understanding of earlier descriptive and
subject cataloging practices.
	6.	Reading knowledge of a foreign language.
