Subject: Web Course Announcement

The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS), a
division of the American Library Association and leader in the collections
and technical services profession, is pleased to announce our next offering
of the popular Fundamentals of Acquisitions Web course, September 22 –
October 17, 2003.

Designed to give you a broad overview in the operations involved after the
selection decision is made, Fundamentals of Acquisitions focuses on what
you need to know about the basics of acquiring monographs and serials;
financial management of materials budgets; and, relationships among
acquisitions librarians, library booksellers, subscription agents, and
publishers.  The five basic components of this course are goals of
acquisitions services; methods and basic functions of acquisitions;
vendors; ethics; and budget/finance and accounting.

This Web-based course is tailored for librarians and paraprofessionals new
to the acquisitions field.  As it is a fundamentals course, topics are
introductory in nature. Class segments are geared to cover issues of
interest to staff in all types of libraries.

Julie Gammon (University of Akron) and Tschera Connell (Ohio State
University) will lead the September 22 – October 17 session.  Gammon is an
Associate Professor and Head of the Acquisitions Department at University
Libraries, University of Akron and Connell is an Associate Professor,
Serials and Electronic Resources at OSU Libraries.

The course is sponsored by the Association for Library Collections and
Technical Services and hosted by Ohio State University using WebCT course
management software.

The registration fee is $95.  The deadline for registration is September 12,
2003.
