Subject: Call for Nominations

Nominations are (mildly belatedly) invited for the office of Vice Chair,
ALA/ALCTS Out of Print Discussion Group. The Vice Chair must be a member
of ALCTS, and will serve a one-year term as Vice Chair, starting
immediately (or at ALA Midwinter, whichever comes first), before serving
a one-year term as Chair.

Attendance at ALA Midwinter and Annual meetings is required, as the
Chair's/Vice Chair's primary duty is the organization of Discussion Group
meetings at those conferences. The Chair's/Vice Chair need not be an
acquisitions librarian as such, but should understand and/or be interested
in acquisitions processes and issues.

Recent OP DG topics have included the metaphysical nature of what actually
constitutes "out of print" from a publisher's and bookseller's perspective,
and how titles can be brought back "from the dead" via digitization. It's
fascinating stuff, come to find out, and the discussion is always lively
and informative.

Also, as is the nature of DG's, topics can be comparatively timely in
nature, absent the need for long lead-times. As such, it's fun to help
slap together some current ideas and issues into a full-blown and ad hoc
discussion among smart and talented people.

To nominate (and self-nominations are of course allowed/encouraged), send
name, title and institution of nominee with a brief statement of interest
to the current Chair (i.e., me) before by Thursday, July 31, and a ballot
will be created and posted in time for the new Vice Chair to be named by
the end of August (in plenty of time to help get a discussion organized
for next January).

Thanks,
Bill
