THE UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT LIBRARIES

Serials Cataloger
Search # 03A296)

Under the direction of the University Archivist and the general supervision
of the Catalog Librarian/Liaison to the Dodd Research Center, the Serials
Cataloger is responsible for providing original cataloging according to the
Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (2nd edition, 1998 revision) for
approximately 1,500 20th century university archive serial titles located
at the Dodd Research Center at the University of Connecticut, Storrs
Campus. Cataloging includes providing subject access using the LC Subject
Headings and full MARC21 tagging and when necessary, upgrading incomplete
records, adding subject headings and other data as required. This is a
temporary, full-time position.

Qualifications: ALA-accredited MLS and at least one year original serials
cataloging experience in an academic or research library; knowledge of
current trends in cataloging and automated library operations; working
knowledge of AACR2 2nd ed. rev., LCRIs, CONSER Editing Guide, LCSH, MARC21
coding for serials; experience with online cataloging utilities such as
OCLC and RLIN; and, excellent analytical skills. Knowledge of the Endeavor

University Setting: The University of Connecticut, established in 1881, is
a Carnegie Research I University. It was recently cited as one of the top
20 public universities in the nation and is engaged in UConn 2000/21st
Century UConn, multi-billion dollar campus building projects. The main
campus, situated in Storrs on 3100 acres of woodland and rolling hills, is
located approximately 30 miles from Hartford, the state capital, and midway
between Boston and New York City. There are approximately 21,750 students
system-wide.

University Libraries: As a member of the Association of Research Libraries,
the Libraries are technologically advanced and recognized as an exciting
center of intellectual life on campus. The Libraries are organized in
team-based structures and are engaged in ongoing strategic programs. The
Libraries operate in a heavily electronic environment with approximately
25% of the acquisition budget spent on information in electronic form.

Compensation: Anticipated hiring salary, $40,000s to low $50,000s depending
upon experience. University benefits include 22 paid vacation days/year, 12

JOB SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the University Archivist and the general supervision

Cataloger is responsible for cataloging approximately 1,500 20th century

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Cataloging  responsibilities

Provides original cataloging of university serials in print, including
yearbooks, annual reports, technical reports, various publications of
university departments and centers, course catalogs, bulletins,
newsletters, programs, press guides, etc. All original cataloging is
performed according to the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (2nd edition,
1998 revision) as interpreted by the Library of Congress, following CONSER
guidelines, and provided subject access using the LC Subject Headings.
Records are given full MARC21 tagging. When necessary, the Cataloger
upgrades incomplete records, adding subject headings and other data as
required.
