The Hekman Library at Calvin College seeks a highly motivated and energetic
librarian to work within a team that provides exceptional service to
members of an academic community that value the library. Duties include
providing reference and research assistance, teaching information literacy
classes, communicating with instructors in selected academic departments,
and supervising the staff that acquires all types of library material. The
successful candidate will staff a busy reference desk, including rotation
in the evening and weekend schedule, will teach in a successful formal
information literacy program, and will have significant contact with
instructors of selected academic departments. The Reference and
Acquisitions librarian will also supervise the daily activities of three
support staff members in Acquisitions and Serials who acquire 2,700
serials and nearly 10,000 monographs annually.
The Hekman Library of Calvin College employs eight librarians and thirteen
paraprofessionals. The staff is fully committed to creating a
state-of-the-art website and digital library while maintaining one of the
finest and largest traditional liberal arts libraries in the state.
Serving the curricular and research needs of students and faculty is the
central mission among the librarians. Librarians play a significant role
in the educational mission of the college.
Required qualifications include a Masters of Library Science Degree (MLS),
or a degree from an ALA-approved program; Three to five years in a
Reference or Acquisitions department within an academic library, or
equivalent combination of education and experience; Strong communication,
organization, human relations, and computer skills; Highly desirable
qualifications include a second Master's degree; Undergraduate degree in a
science or economics; Experience managing electronic journals; Knowledge of
one or more European languages.
Located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Calvin College has a faculty of 300 and
an enrollment of approximately 4,200 students. It is a comprehensive
liberal arts college affiliated with the Christian Reformed Church. Our
