Subject: 2003 Updated Welcome Message & Editorial Policy
Dear Subscribers: Another year has begun and below is the updated
version of the ACQNET-L Welcome message and Editorial Policy. Mostly it
is the same but I
draw your attention to a couple of changes:
1. Due to the amount of "spam" we receive (and that you never see
because we
moderate the list) we have decided to set the list to "subscribers only"
for posting.
We had it open so that people who wanted to send us position postings
and meeting
announcements who aren't subscribers could do so - they still can send
these to
me directly at cookei_at_appstate.edu if they don't want to subscribe. If
anyone has
problems posting because of this, I can help get your subscription
corrected if needed.
This will take effect as soon as the list manager at Appalachian makes
the change.
2. Soon you will be seeing a little footer on all messages from ACQNET
that reminds
you of where to go to see the archives and the below information. Again,
this will
become effective as soon as we test it and make sure it works properly.
3. Finally - now that we have 4 fully-trained moderators, we sincerely
will make an effort
to speed up the postings on ACQNET so that people will take advantage of
the list.
Thanks,
Eleanor

ACQNET-L
The Acquisitions Librarians Electronic Network
Welcome to ACQNET.
The purpose of this message is to give you some information about
ACQNET.
ACQNET is a forum in which acquisitions librarians and others interested
in acquisitions may exchange information and ideas, and find solutions
to common problems. It started with a group of 25 librarians in
December, 1990 and as of February 2003 has over 1700 subscribers.
ACQNET is a moderated list. It uses the "Listproc" software platform.
Messages are posted several times a month. Although you can subscribe
and un-subscribe at will, you cannot contribute to the list directly.
The editors receive all potential postings, and then they organize,
edit, summarize and distribute them to the subscribers. You do not have
to be subscribed to ACQNET to submit a posting, but your posting should
be relevant to the aims of the list. COMMERCIAL POSTINGS ARE NOT
ACCEPTED (see below for more information). If you do not wish to
subscribe to ACQNET, please submit your posting directly to the Chief
Editor, Eleanor Cook at:
cookei_at_appstate.edu

ARCHIVES
Official archives of the list are available via AcqWeb. These are
maintained by Eric Lease Morgan. The archives are divided into three
sections:
1990-July 2000 (When ACQNET-L was a digested newsletter with volume
and issue numbering); postings from August 2000, which are
chronologically arranged; and Acqflashes, which are also chronological
and are kept for one year and then purged. A search engine is available
from which one can search for specific topics or threads.
EDITORIAL POLICY
SCOPE
ACQNET subscribers discuss anything they want within the main area
of interest of the list which is library acquisitions, collection
development, and related subjects. Subscribers need to keep in mind the
other existing lists such as: AutoAcq-L, Liblicense-L, COLLDEV-L,
SERIALST,
and various integrated library system-related lists. Feature articles
or reports
should generally be submitted to _AGAINST THE GRAIN_ or other
appropriate print newsletters or journals.
ACQNET does not accept want lists or items to give away. Such lists
may be sent instead to electronic lists that specialize in this sort of
activity. These can be found through AcqWeb.
This is an edited list. The editor(s) reserve the right to make all
decisions regarding the posting of messages. Those that are judged to
fall outside the scope of interest of subscribers are returned to
senders with an explanation for the rejection, or suggestions for
re-submission. All messages not returned are posted. No anonymous
messages are posted. Postings must be in the English language. The
Editorial Board reserves the right to rule against any postings.
Since ACQNET is an independent, non-profit entity, with no formal
affiliation with any library organization, the only further appeal to
a contested posting would be to the entire subscriber list, but this
has rarely been requested.
OBLIGATIONS OF CONTRIBUTORS
Contributors clearly understand the importance of assuring the
accuracy of the information which they include in their postings
and their accountability to the group and the profession on that
score. The experience of some of our colleagues on other networks
suggests that this is essential.
ACQNET promotes congenial and courteous scholarly discussion.
Contributors may argue facts or opinions, however, personal attacks on
other contributors or institutions will not intentionally be posted.
"Flames" are not welcome.
Subscribers need to remind themselves that the over 1700 addresses
from many countries represent a wide span of cultures and levels of
expertise. Message content and language should reflect an
appreciation that what is being said, as it were, is spoken from a
podium in front of a very large, very diverse group of people. For
instance, often humor is interpreted differently depending upon a
person's cultural background or beliefs.
SUBMISSION OF POSTINGS
Contributors who wish to communicate with the group send a posting
to the editor at ACQNET-L_at_LISTPROC.APPSTATE.EDU. The editor
requests that a single message deal with a single question or
issue, as it makes the job of editing and combining with other
postings considerably easier. Please send replies to established
threads to
the above address, NOT to the editor’s personal address, since editors
take
turns handling postings and all editors want to receive the message.
Contributors are asked to make sure that their names appear in the
"FROM" line of their postings, not just their e-mail address, or in
the signature information if they sign their messages. Name,
affiliation, and email address are preferred.
Please indicate specifically on the "SUBJECT" line the topic of the
message. Words such as "For ACQNET" or "RE: ACQNET 3:22" are not
sufficient, although it is helpful to start the subject line with the
word ACQNET:
Postings should be under 200 lines. Longer files should be split
and sent separately so to be posted successively. Margins should be
set so that a line is between 70 and 75 characters long. PLEASE DO NOT
SEND Attached files; all submissions should be e-mail messages in basic
ASCII format.
Contributions are accepted only when they are sent to ACQNET
through the Internet.
ACQFLASHES
ACQflashes are single-topic postings of a time-sensitive nature.
They are archived for one year only. These are sent out more quickly
than regular ACQNET postings. Items such as surveys, meeting
announcements and job postings that have some aspect of acquisitions
responsibility or would be of interest to the subscribers are sent out
as ACQflashes. ACQflashes are sent out as soon as possible after
receipt.
Request that your posting be sent as an ACQflash if it is
time-sensitive.
EDITING
ACQNET derives much of its appeal from the fact that it is current,
allowing contributors to express concerns and opinions and get
rapid feedback. Contributors are therefore advised that editing of
the messages that they send is kept to a minimum. It is limited to
looking for erroneous information, organizing the postings so that
they are as easy to read as possible, and fixing grossly incorrect usage
of the language. Paragraphs with complete sentences are appreciated and
the use of abbreviations and uncommon initials or jargon is discouraged.
The editors assume that information sent to
ACQNET-L_at_LISTPROC.APPSTATE.EDU
is meant to be redistributed to subscribers. Private
communications to the Editor or others should not be sent to that
address. Be aware that survey replies or other private communications
that inadvertently come to ACQNET-L will not be redistributed, but
neither will they be forwarded.
Contributors are sometimes uncertain about whether they can name
other parties, especially when they possess critical information
about those parties. ACQNET policy is to print names and critical
information which is factual and verifiable, but not to print
derogatory or critical opinions which add nothing to the facts.
COMMERCIAL MESSAGES: ACQNET does not accept commercial
advertisements of any kind. Press releases from companies of interest
to the subscribers may be sent to AcqWeb.
COPYRIGHT
The copyright of individual postings to, and archived files of
ACQNET is owned by individual authors. Use of the information
posted in ACQNET for commercial purposes is prohibited except by
written permission of individual contributors. Posting to ACQNET
automatically grants the editor the right to use contributions in
whole or in part in subsequent publications but only for
non-commercial purposes.
CROSS-POSTING
Cross-posting from other lists is accepted when the content relates
directly to the areas of interest to subscribers of ACQNET. It is
the responsibility of contributors of a cross-post to obtain
permission from the original author to post the message to ACQNET,
and state that permission has been granted in the cross-post
submission.
DISCLAIMER
Contents of all postings are the responsibility of the contributing
authors and do not imply the endorsement of the editor, the
editorial board, or Appalachian State University.
RELATION TO ACQWEB
ACQNET maintains an affiliation with AcqWeb, a world-wide-web
site developed by Anna Belle Leiserson. AcqWeb provides a
hot-link source of publisher and vendor home pages, as well as
links to other resources of interest to acquisitions librarians.

SUBSCRIBER LIST: The subscriber list is closed. It is not available
for commercial use. Any other non-commercial use must be cleared
by the Editorial Board.
