Subject: Discussion Group Meeting Announcement
ALCTS: Pre-Order Pre-Catalog Searching Discussion Group
Event: Pre-order pre-catalog Searching Discussion Group
When: Saturday, January 24, 2003. 9:30-11:00 am
Where: Philadelphia Downtown Courtyard, Mezzanine 1
This years pre-order pre-cataloging discussion group meeting will be an
informal audience driven discussion. The discussion will deal with the
group's scope as stated below and ideas for future meetings and group
direction. Points to ponder before this discussion are:
1. How relevant is the scope of the discussion group in today's library?
**See scope below.
2. Is the name of the DG still valid? Searching seems to be consistently
dropped recently, was this done on purpose?
3. If you think the scope is dated how would you change it?
4. What impact should recent technology have on the direction this group
takes in the future?
5. In the recent past we have had discussions on issues as diverse as
using technology to automate the ordering process, EDI and ONIX, E-book
ordering. Do these topics represent the proper direction of the group for
the future?
6. Given the group's history and the state of catalog searching in
today's library; what are some of the potential topics you would like to
see explored at upcoming conferences?
Discussion Group scope as listed in the ALA Handbook:
To provide an informal forum for exchanging information and discussion
techniques, new developments, problems, and emerging trends in the
bibliographic searching of library materials to be acquired and/or
cataloged.
Please come with your ideas.
