Subject: Discussion Group Meeting Announcement

The ALCTS Gifts & Exchange Discussion Group will meet at ALA Midwinter
on Saturday, January 25, 2003 9:30 - 11 am Philadelphia Marriott (MAR),
Rm. 309-310.

Discussion Topic: "Disposition of Materials after Nicholson Baker's
DOUBLE FOLD"

In preparation for the G & E Discussion Group program at the 2003
AnnualConference in Toronto, please bring current issues facing G & E at
your institution.

Some questions to spur our thinking in preparation for Philadelphia:

In this post-DOUBLE FOLD era, do we dare dispose of any library
materials or gifts?
 a. What special procedures have been developed and accomodations made
for unwanted material disposition?
 b. Other than library book sales, are libraries able to sell discarded
materials?
 c. Are libraries posting materials to e-bay, selling to OP dealers,
online or traditional?
 d. How do libraries prepare donors for the possibility that they may
dispose of a specific gift not needed for the library's collection?
 e. Do library withdrawals, in particular, fall under the veil of DOUBLE
FOLD?
 f. Do gifts and withdrawal activities merge in your operations?

With the continuing political upheavals, changes and stresses, we want
to again look at any large-scale changes in exchange programs.
 a. In a 1999 ARL Spec Kit on Gifts and Exchanges, 29 respondents saw a
decrease in activity; only 1 respondent saw increased activity. Is this
trend continuing?
 b. Has September 11, 2001 increased interest in exchange programs or
not?
 c. Do libraries find more contacts around the world, or fewer?

For Future Discussion Group Meetings:
Should we invite representatives of online and traditional concerns who
may be an outlet for diposing of library gifts and deaccessions to join
us for our discussion in Toronto?

We look forward to a lively exchange at ALA Midwinter.
