Subject: Position Announcement
POSITION: Acquisitions Librarian, assistant professor (tenure-track
faculty position)
APPLICATION DEADLINE: Applications received by February 14, 2003 will
receive priority consideration.
SALARY RANGE: $38,286 - $46,271 depending on qualifications for a
9-month appointment. Additional compensation for summer work may be
available.
DATE OF APPOINTMENT: August 18, 2003
RESPONSIBILITIES: Provides leadership in management of all aspects
of library acquisitions, including verifying, ordering, claiming,
receiving, and paying of resources in all formats, including serials.
Supervises the work of library technicians in the Acquisitions Area and
promotes staff development. Serves as primary contact for vendor and
publisher representatives and conducts negotiations to secure discounts
and services. Works with the Collection Development Librarian to
allocate and monitor the materials budget, which exceeds $1 million.
Manages disposition of gift books. Evaluates current acquisitions
policies and procedures and recommends appropriate changes, especially
in response to changing technology. Participates in preparations for
the Library's migration to a new integrated online system, including an
acquisitions and serials subsystem. Responds to questions from
librarians and other campus faculty members about materials requests and
other acquisitions issues. Provides statistical information for
academic accreditation reports and prepares other acquisitions reports
as requested. Offers instruction sessions for Library users. Library
faculty share in collection development work with academic departments,
in weekend reference rotation, and in university governance through
membership on committees and task forces.
QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED: MLS from an ALA-accredited program (second subject
Master's degree required for tenure). Minimum two years recent post-MLS
experience in the acquisitions department of a library at a comparable
academic institution. Minimum two years supervisory experience.
Collection development experience in an academic library. Experience in
using an automated acquisitions system. Experience in working with
vendors. Demonstrated skills in budget management and in customer
relations. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both
written and oral. Detail-oriented while maintaining flexible outlook.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively. Ability
to engage in scholarly and professional development activities at the
level necessary to meet requirements for tenure and promotion.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS: Second subject Master's degree. Experience with
an ILS, ExLibris ALEPH 500 or system migration. Experience in reference
and instruction. Academic preparation or experience with business or
engineering materials.
RELATED INFORMATION: Memorial Library and the branch Music Library support
the curricula with a collection of approximately one million volumes,
2,500 current print periodical subscriptions, and 125 electronic
databases containing full text for more than 17,000 journals. The
library is a selective depository for government documents, and houses a
number of collections such as maps, archives, and audiovisual materials.
The University is served by the library's 18 faculty, 21 support staff,
and student assistants. Bibliographic access is provided by the PALS
integrated library system with migration to ExLibris' Aleph being
