Dean of the Library
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) invites applications and
nominations for the position of Dean of the Library. The position offers a
challenging opportunity for a leader with a strong vision of the university
library and the managerial skill to translate that vision into reality.
The Margaret Rawlings and T. Cartter Lupton Library supports the curriculum
and research needs of UTC’s students, staff, and faculty. The library
staff consists of 13 full-time tenure-track faculty members, and 16 support
staff members. The Lupton Library has over 1.9 million items in its

The Position
The Dean of the Library serves as the chief administrative officer of the
library and reports directly to the Provost and Vice-Chancellor for Academic
Affairs. The Dean will be responsible for strategic planning, preparation
and administration of the budget, collection management, personnel
administration, and maintenance and enhancement of cooperative efforts with
other university libraries. The Dean will be expected to support the
educational goals of the university through the continuing development of
the print collections as well as pursuing new technologies in support of
scholarship and learning. The salary for this tenure track position is
commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Qualifications
Candidates must have an MLS or its equivalent from an ALA accredited
school, and at least five years of successful library leadership with
progressively increasing administrative responsibilities in a four-year
academic library. Preference will be given to those candidates who have
demonstrated ability to manage academic professionals; experience in
financial planning and grant writing; strong interpersonal skills;
demonstrated ability to communicate effectively; demonstrated ability to
work in a constructive manner with a constituency within the library, on
the campus, and with the surrounding community at-large; a record of
community and professional involvement; and a comprehensive knowledge of
all library operations.
