Technical Services Coordinator/Cataloging Librarian
A full-time, 12 month, tenure-track library faculty position in the Humboldt
State University Library, to begin July 1, 2003.
Professional Duties:
The HSU Library seeks an experienced and innovative librarian to head its
newly reorganized Technical Services Department. Primary responsibilities
for this position include supervising and coordinating the work of the
cataloging and acquisitions staff ; managing the library's monographic
acquisitions budget; and performing original and complex copy cataloging for
the full range of print, non-book, and electronic information resources.
This position reports directly to the Dean of the University Library. The
Technical Services Department uses the Endeavor Voyager integrated library
system, OCLC, and Yankee Book Peddler to support its core operations, and
presently handles over 15,000 titles per year in all formats. The department
head works closely with other library faculty and staff to coordinate
Voyager-based technical services processing that involves other library
units, including Periodicals/Serials, Library Media, Government Documents,
and Humboldt County/Archives (special collections). In addition to the
stated responsibilities, the incumbent in this position must fulfill the
requirements for retention, tenure, and promotion as a member of the library
faculty.
Specific responsibilities of the position include:
* Directly supervising 5.8 FTE staff, plus intermittent hourly and
student assistant positions;
* Managing department fiscal resources, including OCLC expenditures
and the student assistant budget;
* Serving as primary liaison to OCLC and its regional affiliate;
* Providing workflow analysis, decision-making, documentation, and
training for technical services functions and procedures;
* Coordinating monographic acquisitions processes, including approval
plans, firm orders, claims, out-of-print searching, fund tracking, budget
reporting, etc.;
* Providing oversight for monographic acquisitions expenditures;
* Developing, maintaining, and monitoring cataloging policies in
accordance with applicable national standards;
* Performing original and complex copy cataloging of information
resources in all monographic formats;
* Performing original cataloging, copy cataloging, and re-cataloging
of serials, including electronic publications;
* Solving difficult problems involving the creation and editing of
bibliographic and holdings records;
* Assuring bibliographic quality control in the Voyager online public
access catalog (OPAC);
* Coordinating work with vendors in obtaining records for the OPAC and
for exporting OPAC records for broader consortial use;
* Developing, coordinating, and maintaining authority control
processes;
* Coordinating the cataloging and processing of United States and
State of California government documents;
* Overseeing the development and maintenance of the Technical Services
Department web pages on the Library website and intranet.
Depending upon workload and professional interests, the librarian in this
position will also have an opportunity to provide assistance at the Library
reference desk and/or assume a bibliographer assignment.
Candidates for retention, tenure, or promotion are subject to annual
performance evaluation, including both peer and administrative review.
Incumbents must be able to demonstrate professional contributions in the
following four categories: effectiveness in librarianship; scholarship and
creative activity; service to the University and profession; and service to
the community. Contract provisions specify that "the normal period of
probation shall be a total of six (6) years of fulltime probationary service
and credited service, if any." The President, upon the recommendation of the
library faculty and the Dean of the University Library, may grant up to two
(2) years of probationary service credit at the time of initial appointment
and award early tenure prior to the normal six (6) years of probationary
service.
Professional Qualifications:
Required:
* MLS from an ALA-accredited program and a minimum of three years of
professional library work experience directly related to the duties of this
position by the time of appointment;
* Supervisory/managerial experience;
* Original cataloging experience, including work with the Library of
Congress classification system;
* Working knowledge of AACR2, MARC, LCSH, LC classification, and a
bibliographic utility;
* Cataloging experience using a current generation integrated library
system;
* Familiarity with current trends, standards, and emerging
technologies in cataloging and technical services, including those related
to digital information resources;
* Demonstrated flexibility and commitment to a participatory
management style;
* Proven ability to train staff and delegate responsibilities
effectively;
* Strong public service commitment and ability to work collegially;
* Continuing commitment to professional development;
* Ability to balance multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
Preferred:
* Experience with the Endeavor Voyager system, including working
knowledge of the Cataloging and Acquisitions Modules;
* Experience cataloging electronic resources, including databases,
e-journals, and/or e-books;
* Working knowledge of OCLC bibliographic utility;
* Familiarity with CONSER standards for serials cataloging;
* Previous work experience with acquisitions and/or fund management.

Rank and Benefits:
Appointment will be at either the Senior Assistant Librarian (salary range:
$50,100-63,300), or Associate Librarian (salary range: $57,612-80,136)
level. Rank and starting salary will depend upon the candidate's
qualifications and experience. Benefits include 24 days of vacation, 12 days
of sick leave, and 10-14 legal holidays per year; retirement and health
plans; and an optional 10-month year. Additional information on the current
