Position: Electronic Resources Serials Librarian
Salary: Assistant Librarian I to Associate Librarian IV
($37,920 - $52,620)

Responsibilities: Under the general direction of the Head of the
Serials Department, the Electronic Resources Serials Librarian is
responsible for developing local cataloging policy and documentation for
serials and electronic continuing resources; provides training in
cataloging and the use of online systems; serves as the department's
primary resource person on cataloging issues; catalogs and classifies
resources in a variety of languages and formats using AACR2, LC
Classification, LCSH and MARC21; investigates alternative methods for
producing bibliographic records for digital materials including uses of
different metadata schemes and automated processes. The Electronic
Resources Serials Librarian takes a lead role in cataloging and
formulating bibliographic control and access policies for continuing
resources in electronic formats. Participates in planning and
decision-making for the department and serves on library committees.
The library uses the ExLibris Aleph integrated library system, including
SFX and Metalib software. It contributes bibliographic records and
holdings to the California Digital Library's Melvyl union catalog. OCLC
is the library's utility for cataloging and interlibrary loan. UC Davis
participates in the CDL Shared Cataloging Program as a receiving library
for CDL shared acquisitions.
The Serials Department (2 librarians, 18 classified staff) is
responsible for acquisition, receipt, cataloging, inventory control and
database maintenance of continuing resources in a variety of languages
and formats. Serials Department staff work closely with the Monographs
Department (5 librarians, 16 classified staff) to coordinate policy and
procedures for bibliographic control and access to the full range of
library materials.
Required Qualifications: Master's degree in librarianship from an
ALA-accredited institution or its equivalent; cataloging experience or
recent coursework; knowledge of current cataloging principles and
procedures relevant to serials including AACR2, MARC21, LC
classification and LC subject headings; interest in the issues and
standards related to the bibliographic control of electronic resources;
strong analytical and proactive problem-solving skills; solid facility
using personal computers and the Internet; flexibility to work with
multiple assignments and priorities; ability to adapt to rapid change
and to exercise creativity and initiative; ability to work independently
and collaboratively in a culturally diverse environment; effective oral
and written communication skills; reading knowledge of one or more
foreign languages; effective human relations skills; demonstrated
ability to work effectively with public and technical services staff at
all levels; evidence of commitment to professional growth and
development.
Desired Qualifications: Recent cataloging experience in an academic
library; experience with OCLC or other major bibliographic utility;
experience with contributing records to a union catalog; familiarity
with emerging metadata standards (e.g., Dublin Core, XML, etc.);
experience cataloging materials in electronic formats; experience
training/teaching and preparing documentation; supervisory or management
experience.

holdings of over 2.9 million volumes, including over 41,000 currently
received serials. The General Library is an active partner with the

vacation and 12 days of sick leave per annum. The University has an
