Ferris State University, a national leader in career-oriented,
technological, and professional education, is currently recruiting for the
position of Collection Development and Acquisitions Librarian.
Responsibilities: Manages acquisitions, collection development, and gift
programs. Supervises and participates in monographic acquisitions
activities including pre-order verification, ordering, receiving, payment,
and claiming processes; develops and monitors the overall acquisitions
budget ($870,000+); produces budget and collection development reports.
Oversees approval plan; develops business relationships with vendors and
publishers; monitors and evaluates vendor performance. Works with subject
liaisons to select materials, assess collections, and formulate collection
development policies. In consultation with departmental staff, develops
and documents policies, workflows, and procedures. Collaborates with
Serials Librarian, Automation Librarian, and other staff in matters related
to serials acquisitions, selection of online resources, and licensing
agreements. Collaborates with Government Documents Librarian regarding
documents acquisitions. Some reference desk coverage; appropriate
university-wide and professional activities.
Qualifications: Required: ALA-accredited masters degree in library or
information science; course work and/or work experience in library
technical services. Must possess effective communication, interpersonal,
organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills; ability to work
independently and as part of a team; strong customer service orientation;
familiarity with spreadsheet and database programs; experience in planning
and maintaining budgets; awareness of current and emerging trends in
publishing and information delivery; interest in innovative uses of
information technology for library applications, especially concerning
acquisitions management.
Preferred: Work experience in an academic library; experience in library
acquisitions, supervision, staff training, and using an Innovative
Interfaces system; additional graduate degree.
Salary & Benefits: $32,000 - $38,000 for a 12-mo. tenure-track faculty
appointment with rank, plus an excellent benefits package valued at
approximately 36% of base salary. Comprehensive benefits (after applicable
eligibility and accrual periods) include 20 days vacation, two days
personal leave, paid holidays, insurance (health, dental, vision, life,
disability), medical reimbursement account, retirement system options
(e.g., TIAA-CREF, Fidelity) with 12% university contribution, tuition
waiver, and generous support for professional activities.
Description of Ferris State University and the surrounding community:
Serving close to 10,000 students, Ferris State University offers 120
academic programs in a diversity of disciplines, with graduate and
professional programs in optometry, pharmacy, criminal justice
administration, information systems management, and education. FLITE
(Ferris Library for Information, Technology, and Education), our new,
highly electronic, technologically advanced library facility, opened in
March, 2001. FLITE features a variety of public work and study spaces, a
total seating capacity of 1,300, and computer connectivity for more than
1,000 users. The library recently migrated to the Innovative Interfaces
Millennium system. Ferris's main campus is located in Big Rapids, Michigan,
a city of 12,000 located on the picturesque Muskegon River, 55 miles north
of Grand Rapids and within 220 miles of Detroit and Chicago. Nestled in
