ASSOCIATE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIAN FOR COLLECTIONS
Columbia University in the City of New York invites applications and
nominations for the position of Associate University Librarian for
Collections. Columbia is one of the world’s leading research
universities and educational institutions, and its Libraries, grounded in
collections of remarkable breadth and depth, play a recognized leadership
role in advancing the learning and scholarly mission. The Libraries
serve over 22,000 students and 2,900 faculty at the several Columbia
campuses through a system of 22 libraries. Current collections include
7,500,000 bound volumes and 50,000 current serials, with extensive
electronic resources and outstanding global and special collections. The
Libraries participate in a wide range of international, national and
regional cooperative programs, including the Center for Research Libraries
(CRL), Digital Library Federation (DLF), Research Libraries Group (RLG),
Online Computer Library Center (OCLC), and the Association of Research
Libraries (ARL). The total Libraries budget is over $35 million and the
current year collections budget is nearly $14 million. The Libraries have
a strong partner relationship with the Electronic Publishing Initiative at
Columbia (EPIC), the Center for Research in Information Access (CRIA), the
Columbia Center for New Media Teaching and Learning (CCNMTL), and Academic
Information Systems. The Research Collections and Preservation (ReCAP)
high-density shelving facility, owned and operated jointly by Columbia, New
York Public Library and Princeton, opened in January of this year with an
initial capacity of 7.5 million volumes. The Libraries continue a major
space renovation program, and are launching new initiatives in resource
development/fundraising, staff and organizational development, and a
comprehensive digital program.
Major Responsibilities:
The Associate University Librarian for Collections provides leadership and
coordination for the Libraries collections programs. This is a senior staff
position reporting to the Vice President for Information Services/University
Librarian. Major areas of responsibility:
- leads and promotes the development of the print and electronic collections
in support of the educational and research missions of the University
- leads and promotes the development of the collections in areas of
historical strength and national significance including special and global
collections
- coordinates the development of policies which support a dynamic and
successful collection development program
- prepares, allocates and monitors the expenditure of the materials budget
in
consultation with appropriate committees
- participates in the selection, training, mentoring and evaluation of
librarians with collection development responsibilities
- coordinates collection management policies and campus communication
related
to the selection of materials for offsite storage
- develops and coordinates various user needs studies and collection
assessment programs
- works with access services units to improve the management and
availability
of the collections
- works with preservation units to improve the condition and long-term
availability of the collections
- works with acquisitions units in vendor relations, in the development of
innovative and effective procurement programs, and in the management of
gifts
and exchange activities
- works with the digital program to improve access to electronic resources
and
to establish policies and priorities for the creation of digital collections
- participates in the library development program including donor
presentations and contacts and the preparation of case statements and
proposals
which embrace collection development
- develops strong channels of communication with faculty and the Columbia
community
- represents Columbia on collection matters at regional, national and
international forums and promotes new external collaborations which
strengthen
the collections program
- participates in activities that raise awareness, understanding and action
in
the areas of scholarly communication, information policy and intellectual
property
- serves on the Management Committee, the forum for Libraries-wide policy,
priority and budget discussion and decisions
Qualifications: We seek candidates who have significant and demonstrated
leadership experience in coordinating and advancing a comprehensive
collections
program and who understand the nature and priorities of learning and
scholarship in a major research university . Experience with managing large
and
complex budgets and projects, with publisher and vendor relations, with the
development and creation of electronic collections, with faculty and campus
outreach, and with national and international library cooperative programs
is
essential. Ability to work collaboratively and with agility in a complex
organization is important, and outstanding oral and written communication
skills are critical. Knowledge of and experience with library development
programs is highly desirable. A record of professional involvement and
contribution is required. The MLS from an ALA- accredited program or an
equivalent combination of education and experience is required. An advanced
degree is highly desirable.
