HEAD, ACQUISITIONS SERVICES DEPARTMENT - UNIVERSITY AT ALBANY LIBRARIES
RESPONSIBILITIES: The University at Albany seeks a librarian to manage the
operations of a highly automated Acquisitions Services Department.
Responsibilities include overseeing all aspects of acquisitions
(monographic and serial information in all formats, approval plans, budget
management, management of contracts and licenses, and the purchase of books
with cataloging records). Works in close cooperation with the Assistant
Director for Collections to manage an annual acquisitions budget of
approximately $5 million. Provides leadership in training and staff
development for 5 paraprofessionals and 13 classified service staff.
Working cooperatively with the Department's staff and others as appropriate,
sets goals, establishes priorities and work flow, and leads the ongoing
review of departmental policies, procedures and organization. Encourages
and recognizes excellence. Fosters effective communication and teamwork
within the department and with other departments within the Libraries.
Leads the Department in the evaluation and efficient, innovative use of
new technologies in a changing environment. Works cooperatively with other
Technical Services department heads to facilitate communication and
efficient work flow. Research, publication and service to the Libraries,
university and profession are expected to satisfy criteria for continuing
appointment and promotion. Reports to the Assistant Director for Technical
Services and Systems.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: Graduate degree in librarianship from an ALA-accredited
institution and experience using an automated system in a medium size or
large academic library or related environment. Demonstrated managerial,
planning, and supervisory experience, leadership, communication and
interpersonal skills. Direct knowledge of at least one national
bibliographic utility. Demonstrated ability to take an active role in
planning and implementing system upgrades, maximizing system efficiency.
Demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging trends in libraries and
higher education and the acquisition of library resources in all formats.
Preferred: The successful candidate should have experience with various
aspects of acquisitions as well as knowledge of standards and issues
relating to acquisitions, familiarity with MARC formats and trends in
technical services and automation.
Desired: Reading knowledge of one or more western European or East Asian
languages.
SALARY:
Commensurate with education and experience. Salary minima: $36,200 for
Assistant Librarian and $42,575 for Senior Assistant Librarian.
TERMS & BENEFITS:
Twelve month appointment; sick leave and annual leave @ 1.25 days each
per month; health insurance, dental, prescription and vision coverage.
TIAA/CREF or New York State Teachers Retirement available (employee
contributes 3%).
