Subject: ALA Meeting Announcement
Please join the ALCTS Acquisitions Librarians / Vendors of Library
Materials Discussion Group from 8:30-10:15 a.m. on Saturday, January 19,
2002 at the Wyndham Canal Place Magnolia III. Our topic will be “The Ripple
Effects of Terrorism upon Publishers, Librarians and Vendors.”
Since September 11, 2001, there have been a number of significant changes
in not only the content of publications but in the ways publishers,
librarians and vendors conduct their businesses. We will focus upon these
changes informally by giving participants an opportunity to share
experiences and note any emerging trends.
We will address changes in practices related to the publication of titles,
increased interest in back-list titles on hot topics, handling of package
mail, handling of first class mail, travel to conferences and/or to visit
customers, and increased use of other communication strategies to reach
customers (e.g., teleconferencing, fax, email). We will speculate on the
impact of these changes on the scholarly communication industry, and whether
they will be long-term trends or not. We will also discuss how we can
promote greater understanding of one another’s new realities and support one
another in the higher-security conscious environment in which we all now
live.
Please join us for this timely discussion of recent events. And please plan
to stay for the Acquisitions Administrators Discussion Group’s meeting on
“The Vanishing Acquisitions Librarian” immediately following this program.
