ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR FOR COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT


The University of Minnesota Law Library is seeking talented and
motivated candid ates for the position of Associate Director for Collection
Development.  This newly created leadership position will direct all
aspects of collection development in a law library that is nationally
recognized for its outstanding collections consisting of more than 900,000
volumes.  These collections support in-depth scholarly research in Anglo-
American law and include extensive sections devoted to foreign, comparative,
and international law.  The Law Library’s rare book collection cont ains
several thousand volumes of early English and American statutes, reports,
and treatises ranking it as one of the finest in the country.

The Associate Director for Collection Development will report to
the Director of the Law Library and be a member of the library’s senior
administrative team.  The position has full-time responsibility for managing
a 1.1 million dollar acquisitions budget and for shaping collections that
meet the curricular and research needs of law faculty and students in the
21st century.

Responsibilities:

• defining the scope, content, and format of the library’s collections
• allocating funds and managing budget expenditures
• working closely with faculty to monitor research and curricular
developments
• coordinating the activities of li brarians involved in the selection
process
• overseeing acquisitions, serials, documents, and binding activities
• representing the library on campus, regional, and national levels
• other responsibilities reflecting a senior management role

Required Qualifications:

J.D. (or foreign equivalent) from an accredited institution; M.L.S. (or
foreign equivalent) from an accredited institution; demonstrated knowledge
of current devel opments in legal publishing, education, and research; five
years of significant administrative responsibility in an academic library;
excellent interpersonal and communication skills; strong service philosophy,
active professional participation.

Desired Qualifications:

Substantial experience managing law library print and electronic research
collections and budgets; record of scholarship.

Salary and Classification:

Salary and rank commensurate with qualifications. Professional librarians
are hired under the University of Minnesota’s Professional and Academic
classification system which may lead to continuous appointment within six
years based on successful fulfillment of library duties, published
scholarship, and professional participation.
