JOB TITLE:
Acquisitions Librarian

JOB SUMMARY:
Provides leadership to the Acquisitions Department.  Oversees the
acquisition, subscription, licensing, and receipt of library collections in
all formats.  Trains, supervises, and evaluates three monograph and serials
acquisitions assistants.  Prepares and manages the library resources
budget.

REPORTS TO:
Director of Libraries

SUPERVISES:
Acquisitions Assistants

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Acquisitions
·  Oversee the acquisition, subscription, licensing, and receipt of library
   materials in all formats
·  Train, supervise, and evaluate monograph and serials acquisitions
   assistants
·  Initiate, develop, and maintain relationships with vendors;  monitor,
   evaluate, and select services based on performance
·  Evaluate and negotiate license agreements and technical specifications
   for electronic subscriptions; maintain comprehensive file of license
   agreements and similar documents
·  Negotiate contracts with library bindery, oversee bindery preparation,
   make recommendations on bindery preparation and procedures
·  Monitor the efficient and effective use of the library's automated
   system as related to acquisitions and assist in the implementation of
   future automated functions
·  Prepare reports on the activities and productivity of the Acquisitions
   Department
·  Keep up with changing developments in scholarly publishing, acquisitions
   and electronic commerce
·  Work cooperatively with the Cataloging and Collection Development
   librarians and staff to set general policies and priorities for
   technical services

Budget Management
·  Prepare the annual library materials budget
·  Monitor the expenditure of funds, maintain records, and prepare reports
   to correctly reflect the budget situation
·  Recommend budget adjustments to the Director
·  Prepare statistical data, budget reports and projections to facilitate
   planning for collection development and fund allocation
·  Oversee the proper preparation of invoices for review by the Director
   and processing by Financial Services
·  Provide information on availability and costs of serials in various
   formats

General
·  Serve as library liaison to selected academic departments to communicate
   details of collection development policy, to assist with identification
   and evaluation of materials, and to promote effective communication in
   general
·  Reference service 3-5 hours per week, including occasional weekends in
   rotation
·  Actively pursue professional development through service on library and
   university-wide committees, participation in professional organizations,
   and review of professional literature
·  Maintain good working relationships and communication with librarians,
   staff, and the university community
·  Function as a member of the university faculty, including attendance at
   faculty meetings, academic advising, and membership on faculty
   committees.
·  Work cooperatively with the Director and Associate Director
·  Perform other duties as assigned

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
· Master of Library Science from an ALA-accredited program
· Minimum of 3 years of experience in acquisitions and/or serials
  management
· An understanding of the role of the library in a liberal arts environment
· Excellent written and verbal communication and organizational skills
· Experience with OCLC, MARC, AACR2, and integrated library automation
  systems
· Familiarity with spreadsheet and database programs
· Commitment to professional growth and scholarly activity

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
· Budget management experience
· Supervisory experience
· Knowledge of trends in access to digital information and in scholarly
  publishing
· Familiarity with Innovative Interfaces software
· Ability to work effectively in a rapidly-changing fiscal environment
· Leadership ability in matters relating to electronic access to
  information resources

THE LIBRARIES:
The Furman University Libraries consist of the James B. Duke Library, the
Maxwell Music  Library, and the Ezell Science Reading Room.  Library
personnel include 12 library faculty, 15 support staff, and 60 student
assistants.  Collections include over 400,000 volumes, 1,500 current
periodicals, and a wide variety of electronic resources.  Furman has been

ENVIRONMENT:
Furman University is a nationally recognized, private, residential liberal
arts college which emphasizes engaged learning and undergraduate research.
It offers both bachelor's and master's degree programs and has an FTE
enrollment of 2800 and an FTE faculty of 195.  It offers extensive study
abroad opportunities, a Division I athletic program, and an extensive
summer research program for undergraduates.  Furman's 750 acre campus is
considered one of the most beautiful in the nation.  The campus is located
fifteen minutes from downtown Greenville, with its excellent array of
restaurants and cultural events, and forty-five minutes from Asheville, in
the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, with a wide variety of outdoor
recreation opportunities.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:
Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.  Librarians have
faculty status (without tenure), 20 days vacation, and an excellent
benefits package, including domestic partner benefits.
