 Position:   ACQUISITIONS, CATALOGING & BIBLIOGRAPHIC CONTROL LIBRARIAN 
             [ACBCL], Full-time, Grade 12, Non-exempt

 Description: The Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, 
             Massachusetts seeks an Acquisitions, Cataloging & 
             Bibliographic Control Librarian for the joint 
             MBL/WHOI Library.

 Duties:     Under the general direction of the Head of Technical 
             Services, the Acquisitions, Cataloging & Bibliographic 
             Control Librarian is responsible for all aspects of 
             monographic acquisitions and cataloging of print and 
             non-print resources. This person will also assist with 
             serials and special collections cataloging.
 
             Duties: Monographic acquisitions, adaptive and original 
             cataloging for materials in all formats; establishing 
             standards for cataloging and authority quality control;
             maintaining bibliographic records in the Library's 
             Voyager 2000 on-line catalog. Working with the 
             Archivist to prepare EAD collection descriptions 
             and training summer interns and volunteers.

             The successful candidate is expected to take a leadership 
             role in developing, documenting and implementing 
             bibliographic control standards and procedures while 
             working creatively and cooperatively with existing staff 
             to enhance the delivery of information services. 
             This person will also assist with the delivery of 
             reference services and library programs and will 
             perform other professional responsibilities as needed. 
             The Acquisitions, Cataloging & Bibliographic Control
             Librarian participates in local, regional and 
             national committees to keep abreast of current
             trends and changing standards.

 Conditions: This is a bargaining union position covered 
             by Hospital Workers Union Local 767. Physical
             Requirements: Requires stamina; ability to be on 
             your feet for much of the day; ability to operate
             a keyboard, kneel, bend, reach, stoop repeatedly; 
             ability to lift, move, handle and shift library
             materials, computer and related equipment weighing 
             up to 25 lbs. and wheel bookcarts up to 125 lbs.

 Education:  Required: Masters degree in Library and Information 
             Science from an ALA accredited program or 
             equivalent degree/professional experience. 
             Detailed knowledge of automated library operations 
             with special emphasis on descriptive and subject 
             cataloguing utilizing AACR2-R, LCRI, LCSH, MARC and MFHD, 
             OCLC and related standards. Ability to work in a team
             environment. Experience in a scientific or 
             academic library setting. Must have excellent
             communication and interpersonal skills and a strong 
             service orientation. 

             Desired: Knowledge of Endeavor's Voyager integrated 
             library system. Understanding of current trends in
             cataloging, especially with regard to metadata 
             and text encoding systems and the classification 
             of electronic resources. Science background. Reading 
             knowledge of at least one foreign language.
