ASSISTANT DIRECTOR FOR TECHNICAL SERVICES
MABEE LIBRLARY, WASHBURN UNIVERSITY

Washburn University seeks a knowledgeable and innovative leader who has
a thorough understanding of the evolving role of libraries in
contemporary higher education and a strong technical services
background. This currently open position has been redefined as a result
of the Mabee Library's Strategic Planning initiatives. We seek a
self-motivated and experienced librarian who will take a leadership role
in the library and will be a catalyst for new initiatives. The
successful candidate will become a member of the library's senior
administrative group, sharing responsibility for the overall direction
of the Mabee Library system with the Coordinator for Collection
Development and Management and the Coordinator for Reference and
Instruction. This position reports directly to the University
Librarian. With a staff of 20 and an operating budget of $1.5
million, the Mabee Library serves Washburn University, a comprehensive
university with an enrollment of 6500 and faculty of 250. The library
system includes Mabee Library and the Curriculum Resources Center with
collections of 360,000 printed volumes, 1500 current periodical titles,
special collections, and electronic offerings. The Mabee
Library works cooperatively with the Washburn University Law Library and
is a guiding force in ATLAS, the local consortium sharing an Innovative
Interfaces, Inc. system.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
1. Provide vision, direction and operational management of all
technical services functions including acquisitions and cataloging of
materials in all formats and expenditure of a materials budget of ca.
$600,000.
2. Supervise, train and evaluate 1 catalog librarian, 1 serials
librarian, 1 systems and 4 technical services staff, and 5 student
assistants.
3. Coordinate technical services activities and workflow with
other library functional areas.
4. Coordinate and plan for technology changes in the library; oversee
library technician responsible for maintenance and support of library's
on-line systems and computing equipment.
5. Act as library's principal representative to local INNOPAC
consortium.
6. Participate in library-wide programs such as collection development,
assessment, and strategic planning.
7. Take leadership role, locally and nationally, in identifying
and implementing new developments in the field through active
participation in professional organizations.
REQUIREMENTS: ALA-accredited MLS. Broad working knowledge of academic
library operations and of effective supervision. Excellent
interpersonal, communication and organizational skills. Minimum of
three years successful, professional experience in acquisitions, with
knowledge of fiscal management in automated environment. The successful
candidate will have experience with various aspects of the acquisition
of materials in all formats. Demonstrated knowledge and/or experience
with OCLC and integrated library systems. Experience working with
vendors and publishers and knowledge of trends in scholarly
communication. Basic computer competencies including word-processing,
spreadsheets and databases.
PREFERRED: Administrative or supervisory experience in an automated
technical services environment. Some cataloging experience. Experience
with technology applications in technical services. Demonstrated
knowledge of and/or experience with acquisitions and serials modules of
INNOPAC. Knowledge of and/or experience purchasing, licensing or
cataloging electronic resources. . Record of dealing successfully with
organizational change; experience in motivating others and providing
effective leadership and supervision of personnel; ability to view
issues from broad, library-wide perspectives.
