ANNOUNCEMENT OF PROFESSIONAL VACANCY

Position: Head, Collection Development Department

Rank:   Assistant Librarian  or  Associate Librarian

Description:  Under the direction of  the Assistant Director for  
Technical Services, the Head of the Collection Development Department 
provides leadership and coordinates the  work of three service units: 
Monographs Acquisitions, Serials Acquisitions, and Binding.  The Head 
supervises 3 FTE librarians and 15 FTE support staff.  Serves as chief 
collection development officer; actively monitors and analyzes collection 
building activities in order to ensure development of a balanced 
collection; interacts with college and department liaisons  regarding 
development of the collections to ensure support of the University 
curriculum and programs. Develops proposals for allocation of materials 
budget in consultation with appropriate faculty and staff.  Analyzes 
collecting patterns to ensure adequate levels of support for new programs.
Responsible for acquisitions activities including monographic, serials, 
and electronic materials orders, receipt, payment,  record maintenance, 
fund accounting, gifts,  and vendor performance.  Monitors all aspects of
binding.  Sets goals, plans, organizes, and monitors departmental
activities.   Maintains knowledge of advances in technology; trends in
academic librarianship; trends in collection management and acquisitions,
including vendor services; and actively seeks opportunities for improvement
in workflow. Promotes teamwork; facilitates creative problem solving and
promotes positive relationships with faculty and  other library units in a
rapidly changing organizational environment.   The Head will be a key
player in achieving organizational transformations that improve services,
enhance effectiveness,  and achieve efficiencies in Collection Development.

Qualifications: REQUIRED: ALA accredited MLS or MLIS.  At least three (3)
years of relevant professional experience in collection development or
acquisitions (2 years of post-MLS professional experience required for the
Assistant Librarian rank, five years of post-MLS professional experience
required for the Associate Librarian rank).  Demonstrated achievement
supervising staff, preferably in an academic or research library.  Strong
user service orientation.  Analytic and problem solving skills.  Excellent
grasp of current acquisitions and collection management issues and trends.
Excellent interpersonal skills; the ability to foster a work environment
that encourages change and innovation.  Strong computer skills, including
experience with bibliographic utilities, preferably OCLC and automated
library management systems, the World Wide Web, and workstation-based
software such as Excel.  Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to work well independently and with others, including
vendors, at a wide range of organizational levels.  Ability to view
issues from a library-wide perspective and to stimulate cross-functional
collaboration.  PREFERRED: Working  knowledge of one modern European
language; Familiarity with current cataloging practices and AACR2;
Involvement with professional activities, preferably at the national or
regional level.  

Salary:  Assistant Librarian:  Minimum, $35,000; Associate Librarian:
Minimum, $43,300, depending on qualifications.  A supplement for Department
Head will be available for this position.

Benefits:  This is a full-time, twelve month non-tenured faculty
appointment.  Benefits include 22 days vacation, 13 days sick leave, group
medical, dental, and life insurance, an Optional Retirement Program
(including TIAA/CREF, among others), or state retirement, and no state or
local income tax.   Moving allowance available.


The Library:  Located in Tallahassee, Florida's capital city, a growing
community, with a population of more than 213,000, the Florida State
University, a public, coeducational institution of the ten member State
University System of Florida, has an enrollment of over 33,000 students.
The Library system includes the Robert Manning Strozier Library (main
library), and 2 branch libraries (the Paul A.M. Dirac Science Library, and
the Mildred and  Claude Pepper Library).  Libraries on the Florida State
University campus include the Harold Goldstein Library Science Library, the
Warren D. Allen Music Library, and the Law Library.  A Medical School will
open in 2001.  Campus libraries have combined volume holdings totaling over
2,338,000 books and periodicals, over 957,000 government documents, and
over 6,669,000 microforms.  The Library is a member of ARL, CRL, RLG, and
SOLINET.  The State University System Libraries plan to seek a new LMS
