Gary Strawn, Authorities Librarian, Northwestern University
Topic: Streamlining Operations between Acquisitions and Cataloging
Processes in Technical Services: The Future is Here and All Bets Are Off!
While the topic of our last meeting in Chicago enompassed the actual
reengineering of technical services from a human resources perspective, this
discussion will attempt to address this topic from a more functional
workflow
perspective. The speakers will address this topic through showing how
streamlining operations through the batching of certain processes can happen
within both mainframe and client server environments, giving examples.
Phek Su works in a NOTIS library, and will talk about the mainframe
environment, while Gary will talk about the work he has done in conjunction
with Florida State and how it would translate into a client server
environment
such as Voyager. Discussion will also occur as time allows regarding new
"outside technologies" such as EDI and how they are affecting the internal
workflow of technical services. Gary is also prepared to talk some on ONIX
and its future in the library environment. We hope to have stimulating
discussion and talk about new ideas for the future, as well as sharing what
we are doing in our libraries now. Please come and share your insights!
